A man was arrested Tuesday night for spraying red paint on the Washington Monument and writing an anti-government message on it.

Photos taken by a Fox5-Washington DC reporter show that he also threw red paint on the base.
US Park Police said in a statement on Tuesday night that an adult man had been arrested for the vandalism.
Closed for now is the area around the base of the monument.
Park police said that workers from the National Park Service will remove the red paint to return the monument to how it looked when it was first built.
