In Paris in late 1839, just a few months after an early type of photograph called a daguerreotype was shown to the world, there was a funny picture that warned what this tiny picture meant. In Théodore Maurisset's mind, the daguerreotype would cause a mass hysteria called La Daguerréotypomanie, in which people from all over the world would come to a small photo studio and run it over. Some people in the crowd want pictures of themselves, but, holy cow, others want cameras so they can take their own pictures. Maurisset shows them loading the cameras like contraband onto steamships going to foreign ports, and still others come to look at this newfangled thing and all the crazy things going on around it. The noise is so loud that it causes a mass hallucination in which almost everything else in the area around the studio, such as railroad cars, a clock tower, a basket for a hot air balloon, and anything else that looks even slightly boxy, turns into a camera. As the crowds march to the studio, they pass by half a dozen gallows where artists have hung themselves because of the daguerreotype. People hardly pay attention.

What a commotion! What a mess! Well, why not? Before photography, painters were almost the only ones who could show things artistically. People thought that their craft was the best way to make images. (Printmakers and illustrators had their own ideas about how valuable their pictures were, but most painters thought of them as less important.) But now those stupid photographers would get the job, even though most of them were just beginners or, even worse, dishonest or failed artists. Around 1840, when the French painter Paul Delaroche saw a daguerreotype for the first time, he was said to have yelled, "From today on, painting is dead!" Many of his students soon switched to photography.

The early relationship between painting and photography is not exactly like the problem caused by AI-made art today. Image generators like DALL-E 2, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion can change a painting in ways that a camera could never do. But compare what Delaroche said to what Jason Allen of Pueblo West, Colorado, said when he won first prize for an AI-made piece of art at the state fair last September. Even though the $300 prize was small, Allen was still proud of himself. "Art is dead, dude," he said afterward. "That's it. AI won. Humans lost." When new tools come out, people often make big claims about how they will change the world. This gives us a chance to think about what the past can teach us about their future.

At least painting didn't die out in the 1800s. Or maybe even catch a cold. Painters didn't lose their jobs, and Delaroche went on to make some of his biggest and most ambitious paintings. I think he wasn't really worried about being replaced, but he and others made it seem that way because it made for good gossip and gave them a chance to complain about how tasteless or just plain rude critics were. It was also good for business.

Still, Maurisset's idea of a large group of people destroying the landscape wasn't completely wrong. There were a lot of different kinds of people who wanted to be in front of the camera or get one for themselves. They were mostly from the middle and working classes and had almost no ability to buy or make pictures before. Most of the people who supported painters were from the upper class. During the same time that reforms were made to give more people the right to vote and slavery was outlawed (first in the UK, then in the US), the camera took on a more democratic feel. Frederick Douglass, the great abolitionist and former slave, was so interested in what it could do that, during his life, he had more than 160 different portraits of himself made, which was more than any other American in the 19th century. He did this because he thought that by doing so, he could prove his worth and dignity. The camera could be used by anyone (it wasn't, but that's what sitters like Douglass were told), which hadn't been said much about painting before.

In the beginning, painters and photographers had different markets, and photographers had a hard time getting into the exclusive world of the fine arts, both in terms of training and showing. Even the most skilled and art-minded photographers had to fight against the low status the art establishment gave their work. While studio painting became a standard college course in the 1860s (at least in New England), it took photography another 75 years to get a foothold in higher education. Art museums didn't start buying and showing photographs often until the 1930s.

The first cameras were usually big machines that needed a sturdy tripod and a lot of fiddling with chemicals to make a negative that could be used. They had slow shutters and needed a lot of light. Since the negatives needed to be developed and fixed right away, they almost always needed a darkroom close by. So, they were best for things that didn't move much, like objects around the house, buildings, landscapes, and cityscapes—basically anything that didn't change the focus or exposure. When the first photographers went to the battlefield, they didn't look for the intense action of a battle, but rather the dead bodies they could find afterward. In a strange way, the pictures that came out of it made painters want to paint even more still or frozen subjects, and they helped flip the order of painters' goals from trying to paint complicated stories to painting scenes and objects from everyday life.

Not only did cameras change what people saw, but they also made people more aware of the subtleties of how they saw. Especially after hand-held cameras became popular, painters found new ways to look at things that weren't good enough for the canvas before. These included the casual glance, the quick peek, the uncomfortable stare, and, in a more racy vein, the paparazzi glare, the voyeuristic peek, and the secret spying. Beyond that, there's always the chance that a photo will be blurry, out of focus, unintentional, or just a happy accident. It's a given in the history of art that modernist artists used all of these techniques. In fact, it's hard to look at late-19th-century masterpieces like Monet's sun-drenched, blurry haystacks, Renoir's leafy, happy café scenes, or Degas's strangely placed, yawning, stretching, off-kilter ballerinas and not see the influence of photographs.

The influence worked in both directions. To photographers who thought of themselves as artists (as opposed to "operators," who they thought were just commercial hacks), the darkroom was like a painter's studio, and touching and retouching the negative was like studio work. Julia Margaret Cameron, the great Victorian photographer who remade scenes from English literature, often messed up the large glass plate negatives. She got her fingers all over the emulsion, smudged the surface, overexposed and underexposed the print, and awkwardly brought out the parts of the image that weren't in focus or weren't meant to be there. Those were flaws that a commercial photographer would try to avoid. Cameron, who was rich on his own and didn't care much about what other people thought, thought these were things to work on because they were most like the unique choices and hand-crafted manipulations of the genius-painter.

Photographers who cared about public opinion and making money often cropped and edited their negatives, drew on them to darken contours or outline figures, scratched out details that were ugly or annoying, and helped their customers make prints that could be used. In all of these tricks, they used a sense of beauty that was developed by painters. When a portrait or landscape looked like it was painted, it was right. This knowledge was used by Scotland's first photography team. Robert Adamson, who was trained as an engineer and millwright, took the photos and gave the negatives to his partner, David Octavius Hill, who was a painter, to make them look better. For portraiture, trade magazines soon came up with the term "the Rembrandt style" to describe how the photographer should control the lighting and place the subject to get a good picture. And, in a phrase that showed how some photographers wanted to be thought of, the journals often called them "sun painters" who used the light from the sun as a "painterly" tool.

Even so, most people of the time still thought of photography as a technology that cut out the human touch. The sun, the camera, the lens, the shutter, and the silvered surface seemed to do all the work. The operator seemed to do little more than start the process. Sure, you had to know about chemicals, glass, and optics, and you had to be able to handle smelly fumes, but those things weren't seen as important to art. They weren't seen as important to the painter's main and usual concerns with oils and brushes and turning feelings and thoughts into visual expressions. It's not the same as what many artists say about AI-generated pictures today, which is that they don't have any imagination or originality. But you get the point: the new tool is fake and has no color.

From the point of view of 1839, the chance to work together might have seemed like the most unlikely change in the art world. Many of the first people to see a camera thought that the black-and-white image it made was a sign of how new and modern it was, but the demand for color quickly grew the craze. In response, photographers started hiring painters, who added all kinds of colorful details to photographs, often with oil paint but also with water colors, crayons, and even chalk. The practice started early on in Europe and became very popular and well-honed in Japan. In the United States, photographers appealed to people's vanity in a more flamboyant way. A sitter wanted rosier cheeks? You got it! Some blue eyes, maybe? Let's try out some different colors. Or what about a sitter who wanted something she couldn't bring to the studio, like a diamond ring, but didn't have the money to buy it? Done! Over time, sometimes the ways people worked together got more organized. In the treaty ports of China, for example, some business owners set up shops with separate departments for photography and painting and sold both to customers.

No matter what Delaroche and Maurisset said, or what Jason Allen says now, it's always too soon to say that painting or painters are dead. Painting will always be a fine art because a large part of the high-end gallery scene depends on and promotes it. And for many people, putting brush to canvas is a personal and joyful way to express themselves that can't be done any other way. But if the dance between painting and photography in the 19th century is any indication, there will be a time when artist and machine will influence each other, give and take, and maybe even work together. Degas once said to a painter friend who didn't want to do anything new, "You need the natural life. I, the man-made."

Philippa wants to stop using social media. She's worried about how addicting it is and thinks it's doing her no good at all. But then she won't know how to talk to her aunt in South Africa. What will become of all her pictures? How is she going to plan that party?

Trevor wants to go to a different country. He doesn't trust the government or the people, and he doesn't like the weather. But he does get good care for his health. And he likes watching TV. Even the roads aren't too bad.

Philippa and Trevor are two examples of how luxury, technology, and easy-living can ensnare us or box us in. In many ways, it’s a modern and relatable phenomenon, but it goes back at least to the Roman writer, Tacitus. It’s the idea that the trappings of civilization enslave us. How is it that, without even knowing it, those things we thought were helpful and time-saving became indispensable essentials?

The hidden danger of luxury

The Roman army was one of the strongest and most successful in world history. On open land, it was almost impossible to beat their armies. But the Roman Empire wasn't just made up of smart soldiers and quick-cutting short swords. People may have been beaten by the legions, but that didn't mean they were put to sleep. What made that happen was a love of ease and comfort.

Tacitus said that the British were slaves, not because of chains, but because they wanted good wine and fancy dinner parties. In fact, Agricola, the governor of Britain, tried to calm down this group of warriors by giving them "delightful distractions" like warm baths, togas, and schooling. Tacitus wrote, "The stupid Britons called these things "civilization," but they were just part of how they were kept as slaves."

Painted, yelling warriors had changed into calm, polite civilians because of comfort and convenience. (It should be said that Tacitus probably made all of this up. In the Roman Empire, Britain was never as obedient as France or Spain.

People have always tried to win over a group of people by giving them nice things.

Faced with a trade deficit with China, the British Empire sent cheap opium from India to China in large quantities. The British traded their opium for porcelain, tea, and silk when it turned out to be more than just a luxury drug.

The Cold War was also won by giving people nice things. When cheap American TVs and refrigerators made their way into the USSR, the Soviets couldn't hope to match this level of luxury. The bloc came to think that these "luxury" goods could not be made anywhere else but in the USA.

But the example that most of us can relate to right now is how we deal with Big Tech. Slowly but surely, companies like Facebook, Apple, and Google are tying our lives to their algorithms and platforms. Social media are made and set up to be addicting on purpose. Services that save time or money, like cloud storage, are becoming so common that it will soon be impossible to go back. We let our phones or apps create and store passwords for us more and more often, so we don't even have to remember them.

You can’t leave the machine

At first, a new technology or service is a luxury. But as time goes on, it becomes so common and important that we can't go back to a time before it existed. Things that were once "wants" become "needs."

"The Machine Stops," a short story by E.M. Forster, is about a world where "the machine" takes care of everything. There are buttons that let you "call for food, music, clothes, hot baths, books, and, of course, talk to your friends." How accurate has this proved to be? We now have Uber, Skype, Hello Fresh, and Amazon Prime. The machine is also connected to our friends and family.

Can I get out of here?

We think of technology as freeing, but it also limits us. If we believe Tacitus, the things we used to think of as luxury are now making us slaves. Philosophy's job is to see these chains for what they really are. And as we look at our lives, we can decide whether to keep wearing them or start the long, hard process of getting rid of them.

“I was in an incredible amount of pain,” Holt told Ark Media of the fifth and final ink session that she underwent on July 5.

“It’s quite embarrassing having a tattoo artist between your legs but it needed to be finished as I want my body suit to be fully complete,” the mom-of-one added.

“We won’t be able to be intimate until it’s finished healing which will be difficult for both of us as we have a very active sex life,” Holt divulged. “Foreplay for him only currently!”

Despite the sex drought, Holt’s beau has managed to find some humor in the situation.

“When I showed him how swollen it was he joked and showed me a picture of a ‘Monsters In.’ character saying my fanny looked like them,” the tattoo lover revealed.

These people are probably some of the worst dressed people we know, even worse than Lena Dunham. Can you imagine? Gone are the days when fabulous Gloria Vanderbilt lived in her Gilded Age townhouse, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis walked the streets of Manhattan with her sister Lee Radziwell, and Jerry Hall stripped down to his underwear at Studio 54 while wearing Yves Saint Laurent.

For many of us who know a lot about fashion, we often feel like we miss times we never lived through. There's a reason for this: our current fashion outlook is bad, our elite are ugly, and, to put it bluntly, our culture stinks.

The Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference that happened last week at the Sun Valley Resort is the best example of this. The conference, called "billionaire summer camp," brings together the best people in the country.

Even though they have money, the way they looked at the conference shows that money can't buy style—or sunglasses, for that matter.

Exhibit A is Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg, and Tim Cook, the four richest men at the conference. Does it matter if you have billions of dollars if you look like this? Fashion isn't about how much money you have (some of my favorite pieces are secondhand), but it does make it easier to find things to wear.

In this case, it's clear that the person doesn't care about how they look. Whether people like it or not, the way you look really does show who you are as a person and is the first thing people notice about you.

Gates seems to wear the same sweater, pants, and black leather slip-on shoes every day. I like uniforms. The only problem with his is that it looks bad. The sweaters don't fit, the colors are boring, and his pockets are so full that his pants pull in all directions.

Then there is Buffett, who came dressed as a character from Weekend at Bernie's. He wore a medical mask and a lime shirt with lizards on it. Yes, some people still cover their faces with layers of paper. World of Clowns.

Bloomberg looks like he heard the conference was in Idaho and thought, "Huh, I've never been there and don't want to go, so I guess the people there are lumberjacks!" Who wants flannel that would be good for your grandmother's couch pillows?

Tim Cook, who is worth about $2 billion, doesn't dress too badly. It's more that he doesn't seem to realize that he's one of the most successful businesspeople in the world and should dress like it. He appears to be the weakest person in the room. No prestige.
This brings us to Sheryl Sandberg, Anderson Cooper, Gayle King, James Murdoch, Diane von Furstenberg, and her husband Barry Diller.

Sandberg thought it was fine to leave her room at the lodge wearing only flesh-colored clothes. Is this her take on the Kim Kardashian SKIMS style that Kanye West has turned into a brand at Yeezy?

Cooper should know better, since he is Gloria Vanderbilt's son. He and Murdoch don't look like the sons of the most powerful families in the world. Instead, they look like 20-year-old boys trying to get into a Pi Kappa Alpha during rush week.

King looks a mess. There's nothing else to say. It sounds like she went shopping the week before and bought everything in the same shade of lime green. Then she put it all on at once, like a six-year-old.

The fact that Furstenberg and Diller choose to dress so badly is especially surprising. One of the most famous American fashion designers of the 20th century, Diane von Furstenberg is known for her wrap dresses. Since Diller is married to her, wouldn't you be one of the best-dressed people everywhere you go just because you're close to a fashion icon?

It seems not. Furstenberg, well, looks like Furstenberg — that is, someone's crazy aunt. Diller seems to like dressing like a skater boy from the early 2000s. It could be worse, I guess.

Only a few people didn't follow the rules at the conference. Stacey Bendet, who is known for her girly designs at Alice + Olivia, came with a closet full of floral prairie dresses, cowboy hats, and big aviators.

I would have taken off a few of her gold chains, but the rest of her outfit is stylish, especially her yellow wide-brimmed hat and white leggings. She is, without a doubt, the thinnest person at the conference, which helps.

The CEO of Liberty Global, Mike Fries, and his wife, Michelle Malone-Fries, were also not like the rest. His skinny jeans and yellow acetate sunglasses show a subtle sense of style, while her plaid shirt dress (possibly by Burberry), woven clutch, and wedge heels are a well-thought-out look that looks effortless in every way.

He claims to have become a dogecoin millionaire on paper two months later, on April 15.

Despite dogecoin's ups and downs, Contessoto has refused to sell. He intends to purchase more of the digital coin in the future and "hodl" for the long term.

Contessoto believes in dogecoin so much that he now asks to be compensated in it anytime he works on social media advertisements for crypto companies.

According to CNBC Make It, Contessoto will receive a total of $25,000 for an anticipated agreement between his YouTube channel and blockchain firm Acria Network. When it came time to close the sale, the company inquired if he preferred to be paid in US dollars or in cryptocurrency.

He says, "Of course, I said dogecoin." "With other words, they paid me in dogecoin." They paid half up front and the rest after I delivered the video."

Contessoto abandoned his day job at a music studio in Los Angeles in June to focus on his expanding "dogecoin billionaire" reputation online. He admits, "I had no notion how I was going to make money going ahead."

He makes some money by selling items on his website, but his major focus is on growing his social media following.

He earned $28,000 in one month from social media ads and promotions, the majority of which was paid in dogecoin. Contessoto explains, "That's around six months salary at my prior position."

Contessoto intends to continue investing as much as he can in dogecoin after paying all of his expenditures, including rent, food, and other living expenses. "[I'm] all invested in doge," Contessoto says, despite experts' warnings. "Doge is where I keep my money."

His dogecoin assets are valued roughly $931,689 as of around 12:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

According to CoinMarketCap, Dogecoin is currently selling at roughly 23 cents as of 4:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday. "If it gets below 20 cents next week," Contessoto says, "I'll buy the dip again." The digital coin sank to roughly 47 cents on May 9 after hitting a record high of around 73 cents on May 8, and Contessoto invested another $17,500, he had stated.

Financial professionals, on the other hand, are wary of dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies. Experts warn that it's a risky, speculative investment because of its tremendous volatility.

And some warn that investment in dogecoin in particular should be approached with caution, as it lacks the scarcity and technological progress that bitcoin, for example, possesses. Investors should only invest what they can afford to lose in order to avoid being burned.

"You risk losing almost all of your money," James Ledbetter, publisher of the fintech newsletter FIN and a CNBC contributor, told CNBC Make It before. "It has no intrinsic value, and it could go down in price just as readily as it might go up."

Nonetheless, Contessoto's dogecoin prognosis is quite positive. He believes the price could grow depending on what occurs in the next months. He is optimistic that it will reach $1 by the end of the year.

This year, Decentraland, the virtual blockchain metaverse, will have its first Metaverse Fashion Week (MFW). This will be the first time the project has done this. Also, Decentraland said that Dolce & Gabbana, Selfridges, Jacob & Co, Franck Muller, Garrett Leight, Cavalli, and The Fabricant would be there. It was also said at the time that Tommy Hilfiger, an American fashion design company, would be at the event, too. On March 21, Tommy Hilfiger said that joining the Decentraland MFW shows the brand's focus on digital innovation and new ways to reach customers.

Tommy Hilfiger also said that it worked with Boson Portal, a "metaverse marketplace" that has a "virtual lifestyle and cultural playground" in Decentraland. The store will be in Boson Portal, according to an announcement made on Monday. As an interesting side note, the items from the Tommy Hilfiger store can be bought with non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The NFTs can be exchanged for "physical products delivered straight to customers' doors."

“Consumers can teleport their avatar to the virtual store and shop a select range of limited-edition products from the Spring 2022 Tommy Hilfiger collection,” Boson Portal details. “Visitors will encounter floating 3D renders of signature styles, including the varsity jacket for men, the madras shirt for women and a unisex hoodie featuring the iconic Tommy Hilfiger logo.”

The American fashion designer and the founder of the company, Tommy Hilfiger, explained that when he created his company he never thought that fashion events could be hosted virtually. “When I founded my namesake brand in 1985, I never imagined I’d see a time when fashion weeks would be held in a 3D, fully virtual world,” Tommy Hilfiger said in a statement sent to Bitcoin.com News. Hilfiger added:

As we further explore the metaverse and all it has to offer, I’m inspired by the power of digital technology and the opportunities it presents to engage with communities in fascinating, relevant ways.<picture> </picture>

Justin Banon, one of the co-founders of Boson Protocol, said his company is excited to work with one of the world's most well-known fashion brands. Banon thinks this is a "pivotal moment" that will shape the future of both the fashion and technology industries. If you want to buy a Tommy Hilfiger-branded Decentraland wearable, you can buy them from a Decentraland marketplace as well.

In West Virginia, for example, if your annual income exceeds $350,000, you may already be eligible. Other states have significantly higher standards for entering the top 1%. In Connecticut, you must earn over $900,000 to qualify.

According to a recent study conducted by personal finance website SmartAsset, an American family would need to earn $597,815 in 2021 in order to be in the top 1% nationally. SmartAsset used the Internal Revenue Service's 2018 income data and updated it to 2021 dollars using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index to account for inflation.

In 2021, the wealthiest 1% earned more than twice as much as the top 5% in the United States. According to SmartAsset, while the top 1% made nearly $600,000, you only needed $240,712 to break into the top 5% of income in the United States.

However, the threshold for the highest income band differs by state. Check out how much you'd need to earn in 2021 to be in the top 1% of your state.

Let the games begin. Paramount+ is not holding back on The Challenge: All Stars season 2. In Us Weekly‘s exclusive look at the upcoming season, the cast is pushed to their limits — and some may reach their breaking points.

“This may be the hardest thing you’ve ever done in your life,” host TJ Lavin says in the super trailer, as the cast is shown putting their blood, sweat and tears into the competition.

Sophia Pasquis is one of many who breaks down in tears in the video, explaining, “I just wanted to prove myself in these challenges, make myself feel good.” The reality star first appeared on Road Rules: The Quest in 2001 and hasn’t competed since Battle of the Sexes 2 in 2005.

Teck Holmes, who also competed on season 1 of The Challenge: All Stars, seems to get upset in the trailer too. “Why would you upset someone that has the fate of your challenge in their hands?” the Real World: Hawaii alum asks in the video.

This season, however, will likely be messier than last, Katie Doyle recently told TVLine.

“It was not as PC as the first season. It was definitely more cutthroat because of the way the game was designed,” the Road Rules vet shared. “I thought, ‘Oh, no one wants to be the big jerk because they have kids. They don’t want their kids to see them being an a–hole, or their kids’ teacher, their boss, their spouse or their in-laws.’ But nope. I was wrong. No one cared.”

In terms of how difficult this season was in comparison to her past — she’s competed on nine seasons of the flagship series in addition to the first season of All Stars — things were “right on par.”

The Texas native added, “I thought it would be much simpler, but it’s not. It’s as extreme as it used to be. I really did hope it was going to be a little tamer. Again, I was surprised! Like, why can’t this just be cool and chill?”

Southern gentleman? Chris Sutton flew under the radar on The Bachelorette after his bus arrival during the season 18 premiere — but things appeared to change in November with one fellow housemate calling him a “snake.”

The 28-year-old contestant pulled up on a yellow school bus during the show’s October premiere as a nod to Michelle Young’s job as a fifth-grade teacher.

“Didn’t you ever learn bus safety? They tell you not to stick your head out the window,” Michelle, 28, joked as Chris S. arrived at the house. “I couldn’t help myself,” he replied.

While Chris’ sweet arrival — he wore shorts and a backpack to fully embody being a schoolboy — earned him some points with Michelle, as the season continued, he started to make waves with some of the other men.

“I want to say something, there are guys here that think they have it in the bag,” Chris said in a teaser for the November 9, episode. “I think that’s bull—t. They’re not showing you the effort that you deserve.”

One man proceeded to call him a “snake” as clips of Chris smiling played in the background. Meanwhile, Nayte Olukoya claimed “there was no reason for any of this” and therefore chose to confront him. In the teaser, the two men have words, and as Nayte leans in toward Chris, he reacts by saying, “Are you going to put hands on me?”

While Chris clearly rubbed some of the guys the wrong way, he appeared to think his actions are that of a knight in shining armor. “I came in on my white horse and I saved her” he said in the clip.

Despite the drama onscreen, Chris’ close friends describe him as “goofy and easygoing,” according to his ABC bio.

“When it comes to relationships, he isn’t here to joke around,” the bio stated. “When Chris S. falls, he falls hard. He is looking for an adventurous woman who is confident, kind and selfless. … He is a firm believer that chivalry isn’t dead.”

A head of the curve! Rick Leach made a big impression on Bachelorette Michelle Young when he rolled in on a silver platter during the season 18 premiere in October.

The 32-year-old contestant literally put his head on a dinner plate, which was hidden under a silver lid, to meet Michelle on night one. Rick chose to stay inside the cart for the majority of the night — turning heads in the Bachelorette pad.

“I’m someone who is very lighthearted. I like to enjoy life even during the serious moments, and I like to make people laugh,” Rick said during an October appearance on the “Click Bait With Bachelor Nation” podcast of his arrival decision. “I know that you’re not guaranteed one-on-one time with Michelle, and a big concern of mine was going home that first night if I don’t make an impression.”

The California resident explained that his funny entrance also had a deeper meaning behind it, which helped the 28-year-old star learn more about him right from the start.

“The story behind the table itself is I love food and I know she’s kind of a foodie herself,” Rick said. “And in my past, I worked in restaurants for a long period of time, so I thought it was a good way to introduce a few details about me.”

The Bachelor Nation star is a “self-proclaimed hopeless romantic,” according to his ABC bio.

“He finds romanticism in the small things in life and is the type of guy who will send you flowers at work for no reason but to say, ‘I love you.’ He wears his heart on his sleeve because when he is into someone, he wants them to know and doesn’t want to play games,” the bio continued. “He does love a good game night though because he says he can tell a lot about someone’s personality when competition is involved.”

Rick’s seemingly good heart has also led to a lot of trust between him and Michelle early on in the season.

During the November 2 episode of the dating series, the teacher broke down after Jamie Skaar claimed the men were questioning her character because of questions of her pre-show relationships with Joe Coleman and a mystery man.

Rick later came to the rescue and reassured Michelle that no one in the house ever questioned her or her intentions. The heartfelt moment led to Bachelor Nation swooning over him via social media and rooting for him moving forward.

It’s official: Lady Gaga has kicked off her House of Gucci press tour — and if her first look is any indication, she’s definitely not going to disappoint.

Because when she rolled up to the UK premiere on Tuesday, November 9, in a jaw-dropping violet Gucci gown, it was clear that she wasn’t going to mess around with her red carpet glam.

Her dress, which was part of the fashion house’s 2022 collection, was made of entirely sheer material. It featured rushing around the torso, a major slit up the leg and a gorgeous cape that made for oh-so memorable photo ops.

The gown was obviously stunning solo, but in true Gaga fashion, the accessories were just as much part of the equation. The actress, who worked with stylists Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout, teamed the dress with fishnet stockings, massive platform boots, bedazzled gloves and diamonds galore from Tiffany & Co.

Her glam was just as dramatic as her outfit, which should come as no surprise given that the “Bad Romance” singer has her own beauty brand, Haus Labs. She worked with makeup artist Sarah Tan for a look that was very clearly all about the eyes. Seriously, can we take a moment of silence for her purple lids?!? That’s not all though. To really up the ante, she also decided to debut some subtle fringe for the big shebang thanks to hairstylist Frederic Aspiras.

It didn’t take long for fans to absolutely lose their chill over the star’s red carpet glam, as they took Twitter by storm. “Lady Gaga always understand the assignment,” a user captioned a series of images from the event. Another person added: “Cleanse your timeline with Lady Gaga being badass.”

While the star stopped to pose for many photos solo, she was also joined by her fabulous co-stars on the red carpet — and it’s safe to say this cast knows how to clean up nicely.

Adam Driver, who plays Maurizio Gucci, in the film looked dapper as ever in a navy Burberry tuxedo. Jared Leto, who stars as Paolo Gucci, had fun with fashion for the big premiere. He donned a turquoise velour suit, which he accessorized with a pendant necklace.

To see all these fabulous looks and more of the fabulous fashion from the London premiere, keep scrolling! Because from Salma Hayek’s gilded gold gown to Camille Cottin’s sleek suit, we’re rounding up the best looks, ahead!

It’s all for you! Dancing With the Stars paid tribute to Janet Jackson during the Monday, November 8, ahead of the semifinals. Each pair performed two dances and at the end of the night, two couples were sent home.

While many received perfect scores, the nerves were running high for every team.

“I came on the show, and I really didn’t think I would make it far,” Olivia Jade Giannulli said ahead of her Argentine tango. Plus, the night was extra special for the influencer since she has a connection to the five-time Grammy winner — her dad, Mossimo Giannulli, starred in one of Jackson’s music videos. “My favorite memories with my dad were on a dance floor. The fact that my dad is watching me dance every single Monday is just everything.”

While the routine was impressive, the judges weren’t fully sold. While Carrie Ann Inaba said she wanted more “heat,” Len Goodman didn’t like the fact that Val Chmerkovskiy had incorporated a table into the dance.

For some, the pressure was evident during the rehearsals. Melora Hardin and Artem Chigvintsev really butted heads ahead of their paso doble. Luckily, after a bit of back and forth, they hugged it out — and the tense moment led them to their first perfect score of the season.

Later in the night, Amanda Kloots and Alan Bersten went through a similar experience, with her calling him out for being rude in rehearsals. Still — it paid off in the end, and they were given a 40/40.

After the duos’ separate numbers, it was time for the dance-offs. First, Jimmie Allen and Emma Slater did the salsa to “Made for Now” alongside Suni Lee and Sasha Farber. Bruno Tonioli chose to give the bonus points to Jimmie and Emma.

Carrie Ann judged JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson and Olivia and Val on their rumbas. While she called it the “dance-off of all dance-offs,” she gave the points to JoJo and Jenna.

Iman Shumpert and Daniella Karagach went head-to-head against Melora and Artem, each dancing the foxtrot. Judge Derek Hough complimented how far Iman had come but ultimately gave his points to Melora.

Amanda and Alan and Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke each performed the jive. Len said it was a “tough call” but gave his two points to Amanda.

The three couples in the bottom were Olivia and Val, Jimmie and Emma and Melora and Artem. Olivia and Val were the duo with the lowest combined scores and votes, so they were the first eliminated. Derek, Bruno and Carrie Ann — who was crying — voted to save Melora, sending home Jimmie and Emma.

Down with The Crown? The Netflix series has sparked controversy over the years for its embellished tales of the British royal family — and the behind-the-scenes drama is just as juicy as the Emmy-winning story lines.

Season 1 of the drama started streaming in 2016 with Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as her late husband, Prince Philip. Foy, who earned two Emmys for her portrayed of England’s longest reigning Monarch, noted early on that she dreaded the idea of Elizabeth watching her on TV.

“I would hate the idea of her watching it,” the First Man actress told Town & Country in 2017. “When you’re playing a real person, you never want to be ghoulish. I don’t want to pick apart a person. I want to invent someone. So, I would hate for her to watch it and think I overdramatized anything.”

The streamer dropped season 4 of the show in 2020 with Olivia Colman as the queen and Tobias Menzies as Philip. Season 5, set to debut in 2021, will bring in Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce as the royal couple.

While Her Majesty hasn’t spoken publicly about whether she has seen The Crown, some of her relatives have weighed in on the accuracy of the stories.

Sarah Ferguson, who split from Prince Andrew in 1992 after six years of marriage, hasn’t appeared much as a character on the Emmy-winning show, but she said she’d be happy to lend her expertise.

Ferguson joked in July 2021 that she wondered, “Where is Fergie?” while watching some of the earlier seasons. She later reached out to an executive producer named Andy Harries to offer him advice on what it’s really like within the royal family.

“I said to him, ‘Why can’t I help my character?’” she recalled during an interview with Town & Country at the time. However, Harries declined her offer.

Ferguson previously told Us Weekly exclusively that she was a fan of the show — which not everyone can say.

“I thought it was filmed beautifully,” the Her Heart for a Compass author said in January 2021. “The cinematography was excellent. I loved the way they put my wedding in as well.”

When it comes to how the royals are depicted in Peter Morgan’s successful drama, some people aren’t happy with it.

British politician Oliver Dowden, for example, expressed concern in November 2020 over viewers not being specifically told that the show should not be taken as fact.

Princess Diana’s brother Earl Charles Spencer argued in November 2020 that the series is not an accurate retelling of the events. “The worry for me is that people see a program like that and they forget that it is fiction,” he said during an appearance on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh. “They assume, especially foreigners, I find Americans tell me they have watched The Crown as if they have taken a history lesson. Well, they haven’t.”

Celebrities can’t help but chime in on a trending topic. On November 5, Aaron Rodgers opened up about his COVID-19 diagnosis and his vaccination status — comments that sparked many different opinions.

“It wasn’t some sort of ruse or lie, it was the truth,” the athlete said on “The Pat McAfee Show,” referring to how he initially said he was “immunized” before contracting the coronavirus earlier this month. “Had there been a follow-up to my statement that I’d been immunized, I would have responded with this. I would have said, ‘Look, I’m not some sort of anti-vax-flat-Earther. I’m somebody who’s a critical thinker.’ … I march to the beat of my own drum. I believe strongly in bodily autonomy, [in the] ability to make choices for your body, not to have to acquiesce to some woke culture or crazed group of individuals who say you have to do something.”

The Green Bay Packers quarterback explained that he has an allergy to something in both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. He noted that when he had heard Johnson & Johnson was “pulled for clotting issues,” that option was also off the table. From there, he found a long-term “immunization protocol” that he felt was best for him and noted that the NFL was aware of his decision.

Although he petitioned to get his specific protocol approved — and gathered “500 pages of research” to show the league — they still said no and he has since been treated as an “unvaccinated person,” wearing a yellow wristband “at all times” and undergoing daily testing.

The NFL previously said in a statement that the football player and his team are being placed under review following the positive COVID-19 test. As long as he remains asymptomatic, Rodgers will be eligible to return to the field for his Sunday, November 13, game after sitting out on November 7.

Ever since he tested positive for the virus, stars have been reacting to his diagnosis and his views. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, specifically, wrote a lengthy blog about the topic on November 8.

“I can’t help but think of Colin Kaepernick, who was blacklisted by the NFL for passively expressing his frustration with systemic racism — a brave act meant to help his community and save lives — while multi-millionaire Rodgers will continue to play, despite lying to the fans and his teammates and putting innocent lives in danger,” the former basketball player wrote. “Time will tell whether Rodgers will be judged by the content of his character or the strength of his throwing arm.”

Love lockdown! Over the weekend, Kanye West was spotted sitting courtside at a Donda Academy basketball game with his rumored new girlfriend, model Vinetria.

On Saturday, November 6, the 44-year-old rapper, who recently legally changed his name to Ye, attended the Los Angeles-based private high school’s debut match in Minneapolis with the 22-year-old by his side. She shared a video of the Yeezy designer performing during halftime via her Instagram Story.

It is unclear when the two might have started to hang out — but, one week earlier, Vinetria attended West’s Sunday Service performance and posted a photo from the event.

The basketball game sighting comes days after West spoke out amid rumors that his estranged ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, is dating Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson.

In a Friday, November 5, interview with Revolt’s “Drink Champs,” the producer was asked about his six-year marriage to the Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum, 41 — and did not hold back.

“SNL making my wife say ‘I divorced him’ on TV because they just wanted to get that bar off and I never have seen the papers. We’re not even divorced,” he claimed, referring to Kardashian’s recent late-night hosting gig, which occurred in October. According to Page Six, Vinetria was in town during his interview.

The reality star filed for divorce in February. However, six months later, a source exclusively told Us Weekly that Kardashian was “deeply conflicted” about the split with the “Monster” rapper. She was specifically concerned about “what her future and the kids will be without Kanye,” the insider said in August.

During the November podcast, West also talked about how his Kardashian’s four kids North, 8, Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 2, wanted their parents to work things out just as much as he does. “[It’s] no joke to me, my kids want their parents to stay together,” he said. “I want their parents — I want us to be together.”

Following his appearance on “Drink Champs,” a source exclusively told Us that West was “not happy” to hear that the KKW Beauty founder was hanging out with Davidson, 27. While the Grammy winner is “trying to stay upbeat and move on with his life” amid the rumors that the Selfish author has moved on, the source told Us that West is “hurting.”

Earlier this year, the “All Falls Down” rapper was linked to model Irina Shayk. The pair split after two months.

Always right there! After sparking dating speculation, Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers have seemingly gone public with their romance as they cheerily posed on the red carpet together.

The Normal People star, 25, and the “Moon Song” songstress, 27, attended the LACMA Art+Film Gala together, even posing together on the red carpet on Saturday, November 6.

Bridgers stepped out in style at Los Angeles festivities wearing a red plaid skirt, ivory lace blouse and bright red lipstick. Mescal, for her part, looked dapper in a black tuxedo and matching bowtie as he grinned for the cameras.

While their LACMA appearance marked the first public outing for the pair, they’ve previously gotten cozy off-duty, most recently in several of Ziwe’s behind-the-scenes snaps from her Halloween party. In an Instagram gallery posted earlier this week, the 29-year-old comedian shared a group snap where Mescal held the musician in a sweet embrace.

The “Garden Song” performer also wished the Emmy nominee a happy birthday via Instagram Story in February, writing, “Happy birthday pizza boy @paulmescal.” Mescal, for his part, then reposted her pic onto his page, replying, “Mmmmmm.” (Mescal has since deleted his account.)

While the pair have previously remained coy about their romantic status, eagle-eyed fans have suspected the pair were involved for nearly one year after they were spotted together multiple times. Then, Bridgers upped the ante by casting the Ireland native in her “Savior Complex” music video in December 2020.

“I got a little pitter-patter in my heart when I saw [he followed my Instagram page],” she told NME magazine in June 2020, referring to Mescal as “the cute boy.”

The Deceived alum, for his part, previously admitted in November 2020 that he had a secret girlfriend. While he didn’t name her at the time, he called her support and guidance a “lifesaver.”

“To have someone to lean on through such a mad, mad time has been invaluable,” the History of Sound star told British GQ at the time. “Really, I don’t know where I’d be without her.”

Before his 2020 relationship, Mescal had been embracing the single life and dating scene in London.

“I’m really looking forward to dating,” the God’s Creatures actor revealed on the “I’m Grand Mam” podcast in May 2020. “I’m trying not to think of it being weird because, I think, we’ve been in lockdown for f—king months and I’ve had no opportunity to meet somebody new or being remotely intimate with anybody. I’m at the point now where I want to get married and settle down. You know that hysterical thing? If lockdown ever happens again, I’m making sure I’m married.”
