When Epic Games said it was giving all the money it made from its popular online game Fortnite from March 20 to April 3, people who have been hurt by the war in Ukraine should be helped.
The video game company said Tuesday that it had raised $50 million for those relief efforts so far. During that same time, Microsoft Corp. is also giving away the money it makes from all sales of Fortnite content on the Microsoft Store in every country where the game is sold.
The money is going to humanitarian aid groups like the United Nations Children's Fund, Direct Relief, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Food Program, which help people who have been forced from their homes.
That's what Epic said it would do. It wouldn't wait for the real money to come in and be processed by its payment systems before it sent the money, it said. Instead, the videogame developer said it will keep track of all the transactions and send the money to humanitarian aid groups in a matter of days.
It won't be possible for people who buy Fornite items to get out of the program, Epic has said. If players don't want their money to go to help people in need, Epic says they should wait until after April 3.
People all over the world started talking about Fortnite as soon as it came out in 2017. Young people love the game. Most people know about the game's "Battle Royale" mode, where many people fight until only one person or team is left.
