âSeeing all the colors a little brighter today đ¸,â Guthrie, 48, shared to Instagram Tuesday. âIâm so grateful my surgery was a success! Iâm still healing but already noticing a major improvement in my vision. My eyes are filled â with tears of joy! So much gratitude to my gifted surgeon @abrissettemd and her amazing team!â
Guthrie â who will return to hosting âTodayâ later this week â underwent retinal detachment surgery in late 2019 after revealing her 3-year-old son, Charley, âthrew a toy train right at my eye and it tore my retina,â resulting in vision loss. She said at the time doctors were âessentially trying to weld back this tear in the retina very carefully, and really trying hard to avoid the retina detaching.â
The television host previously detailed exactly why she would need cataract surgery telling People, âWhen you have this retinal detachment, most people will end up developing cataracts, obviously at a much younger age than would normally be expected,â Guthrie said, noting âwhen you have cataracts, you get blurry spots and you notice it more and more.â
