It is an achievement in and of itself that Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and star Zendaya were able to deliver the first of two special episodes of the groundbreaking teen drama amid a pandemic, but now that it's out, wow, did "Part 1: Rue" (a.k.a. "Trouble Don't Last Always") show exactly how the 24-year-old earned her Emmy this year.

As the episode opens, we're still unsure of Rue's fate post-relapse-fantasia, and things kick off with what seems like a flash-forward of Jules (Hunter Schafer) and Rue waking up with each other, stealing as many kisses as they can before Jules is off to another day of fashion school.

Right as Jules says, "Can you believe it? It's everything we dreamed of," the veneer of the fantasy cracks, and Rue is left alone in their imagined New York apartment, rummaging through different nooks and crannies to collect the items she needs for another high. As she snorts the drugs, they hit her system, and the episode spins into what seems like the present day.

Rue is wearing the red hoodie from the end of the season 1 finale, sitting in a diner waiting for her sponsor, Ali (Colman Domingo). It's a character we've seen counsel Rue before, but between the sextet of teens the show focuses on, the peers who orbit them, and things like dream sequences and surreal party scenes, we haven't really gotten a chance to get to know Ali until now.

In a break from form, the entire rest of the episode takes place at the diner, delivering an unbridled look at the psychology of a teen addict like Rue, and if there's any hope for her after all.

It doesn't take Ali more than a minute to realize Rue showed up to their dinner high. She erratically tries to argue that she has actually found some balance in her life, until her sponsor breaks through to her with a statement that "sobriety is your greatest weapon."

That information is a pill Rue can't swallow. She devastatingly counters with, "To tell you the truth, drugs are probably the only reason I haven't killed myself."

Ali will not accept this from her, and doesn't take it for an original thought either. As an addict himself, he sees the potential Rue has should she start wanting to be clean. While in her mind she is a drug addict because she is a piece of s---, he recalibrates that to explain she's a piece of s--- because she is a drug addict, meaning she is allowed to blame a lot of her missteps on her addiction. Rue was not born a bad person.

Right about then we learn they're having their conversation on Christmas Eve, which comes as a bit of a surprise more than a year after the season 1 ending, though we did see them attend a winter formal in the finale, so the timing still lines up.

As Rue asks Ali questions about himself and the long road he's traveled as an addict, he reveals that he has two daughters, he had a year-and-a-half relapse after his first 12 years of sobriety, and his birth name is Martin (he changed it to Ali when converting to Islam).

In a hilariously meta line acknowledging the curious group of people Rue surrounds herself with, Ali answers one of her inquiries with, "What am I, your first Black friend?"

The conversation turns spiritual when Ali advises Rue that she should root her sobriety in a higher power, something the teen says she has trouble with as an atheist. Her higher powers are things like the ocean and the music of Otis Redding, but the spiritual connection isn't there.

Ali tries to appease her by saying even if she doesn't believe in God, God believes in her, but it only makes her question whether that means her father died because God doesn't believe in him. Furthermore, in thinking of how survivors talk about how they must have lived for a reason, she asks, "Why does your life have a purpose and my dad's doesn't?"

Ali's response is both entertaining and confusing, with him connecting the story of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. to Nike having an "Our People Matter" sign in its store that white customers take selfies with as Black customers have difficulty buying $130 sneakers. He also calls Gen Z some "mark-ass bitches," but it all leads to the notion that a true revolution has no allies, it's spiritual. "You have to create a new god to believe in something greater than yourself," he says. "Your only hope is revolution."

With that, Ali leaves for a smoke break. Rue gets an "I miss you" text from Jules with a link to the Moses Sumney song "Me in 20 Years." The song plays almost in full as we see Ali try to reconcile with his daughters over the phone and introduce himself to his grandchild as Pop-O.

Once back, with the conversation now focused on Rue's relationship with Jules, Ali outsources a server at the diner named Marsha to help explain why Rue should not seek out any romantic relationships right now. "Everything that's good to you isn't always good for you," she tells Rue. "Trouble don't last always, and it doesn't if you want to make a change," Marsha adds in a voice full of wisdom, reminiscent of Maya Angelou.

Rue breaks down and shares that she blames Jules for her relapse, and that she feels Jules cheated on her when she left town, but Ali fact-checks all that, getting Rue to admit that the girls never defined their relationship. Rue brushes it off and continues blaming Jules for the train station situation, feeling abandoned by Jules even though their escape was Rue's idea that she chose not to follow through on.

The chat flows into the topic of redemption. Rue is convinced she is an unforgivable person for threatening her mother with glass, but when Ali tells her that he grew up a house where there was domestic violence and spent years planning to murder his dad, only to become an addict and hit his own wife during an argument, Rue tells him she still sees him as a good person.

Ali makes a point of how part of the reason the world seems it has gone bad is because too many people think they're unforgivable and therefore have no reason to change, so they run around acting out without giving a f--- about redemption.

Rue and Ali's one-on-one reaches its climax when the 17-year-old tells her sponsor, "I don't really plan on being here that long, and that's the tough part about all of this," to heart-shattering effect.

When Ali asks, "Who do you want to be when you leave this earth?" and "How do you want your mom and sister to remember you?" Rue responds, "As someone who tried really hard to be someone I couldn't."

The episode concludes with the pair exiting the diner into rainy winter weather, and climbing into Ali's SUV to drive home. A cover of "Ave Maria" performed by the series' composer, Labrinth, plays over a long shot of Rue looking drained in the passenger seat.

Given how the episode starts with a fantasy, this special could entirely be Rue in a purgatorial state. It offers no answers about her relapse, but does share Rue's perspective on her relationship with Jules. Stripped away of all the camera tricks, shock factor, and eye glitter, "Part 1: Rue" shows how foundational Zendaya's raw portrayal of a young drug addict is to Euphoria, and how big a loss it would be to both the series and television in general for the resolution to the season 1 finale to be that Rue is now dead.

"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" — Darlene Love

The one non-negotiable record every holiday at home growing up was always A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector, which inevitably felt a lot less festive after Spector killed a woman and went to prison. But absolutely none of that is Darlene Love’s fault, and this song — with its layer-cake Wall of Sound production and her gorgeous, inimitable voice — still epitomizes the spirit of the season to me, because it is so sweet and sad and just jingle-jangle perfect. It somehow never gets diluted no matter how many movies or shows or Macy’s commercials they stick it in. —Leah Greenblatt

                    "Sympathy 4 the Grinch" — 100 gecs

Given their Alvin and the Chipmunks-indebted Auto-Tune and colorful production that mirrors the flamboyant glow of a beaming Christmas tree, it makes perfect sense for 100 gecs to release a Christmas song. However, rather than nod to the wholesome carols of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, Laura Les and Dylan Brady’s “Sympathy 4 the Grinch” is a mischievous pop-punk track about traveling to the North Pole to steal the gifts they didn’t get from Santa himself. With a Mark Hoppus-indebted bassline, puckish gang vocals, and even a ska “pick-it-up," it’s a delightfully ridiculous tune that joins the greater lineage of bratty mall-kid Christmas songs — nestling right in between Blink-182’s sneering “Happy Holidays, You Bastard” and Hollywood Undead’s naughty list anthem, “Christmas in Hollywood." The halls have now been officially been gec’d. —Eli Enis

“Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” — Dokken

Turn your fireplaces up to 11: Dokken is here with a rockin’ (rokken?) take on this Yuletide classic that lends a snarl and an air of menace to the arrival of our Christmas hero. Did they rip themselves off by using the chord progression from the verses of their 1987 single “Dream Warrior”? They sure as hell did! But come on, isn’t Christmas a time for sharing? —Dan Snierson

“Christmas Always Finds Me” — Ingrid Andress

While it was originally released in March, right as the world went into lockdown, the Best New Artist Grammy nominee’s Lady Like exuded fall vibes, best exemplified by the standout single “More Hearts Than Mine.” It makes sense then for Andress to go one season further by releasing an original Christmas song. With this track, the singer-songwriter finds a way to capture the melancholy of the holidays spent social distancing while still maintaining a timeless message about the healing properties of the Christmas spirit. —Marcus Jones

Tinashe's recent surprise holiday EP, Comfort & Joy, adds a contemporary flare to timeless Christmas classics. Closer "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" sees the R&B singer skipping across a stuttering beat and airy keys — a unique punch to a song you've likely heard 40 million times or more. —Alex Suskind

Anytime is a good time to watch what many consider one of the quintessential classic films. The Frank Capra-directed tearjerker tells the story of a man ready to end his life, before a higher power intervenes to show him the devastating impact his loss would have to those that love him. The movie will also have you thinking differently about any time you hear jingle bells.

How often do you see a mainstream movie with a majority Latinx cast? Much less a Christmas movie. This Alfredo Rodriguez de Villa-directed flick tells the story of a Puerto Rican family in Chicago who may be spending their last Christmas all together. Hijinks ensue as they try to make the most of it.

Okay, hear us out. While this Best Picture winner isn’t fully devoted to depicting the holidays, part of the impetus for King George VI seeking out speech lessons is to have the ability to deliver a special Royal Christmas Message like his late father. The film also manages to pack in just as much family drama as any other holiday film, featuring one infamously uninvited sister-in-law.

Again, not a Christmas movie in a traditional sense, but has all the entertaining elements a holiday film brings when it puts a dysfunctional family under one roof. Writer and director Wes Anderson’s meticulous production design also helps one get in the mood to be stringent with their holiday decorating.

If you never anticipated a collaboration between Carrie Underwood and John Legend, you're not alone.

Discussing her performance of "Hallelujah" with the R&B star in her upcoming HBO Max Christmas special My Gift, as seen in the exclusive clip above, Underwood jokingly tells EW, "I don't know if people would have thought, 'Hey, Carrie and John, sing together,' but it works so well."

As Underwood sees it, the key to their success as duet partners is that "we're both singers, and we really get into what we are singing, what we're communicating. It's just such a beautiful song. I'm so glad they sent it to me and he sang it with me, and I've had this opportunity to just be around somebody of his talent."

With My Gift, Underwood expands on her Christmas album of the same name, released in September, and creates live performances of each song that she hopes are seen as "super-beautiful, classic, and timeless."

While it's been a long time coming in an entertainment career that started on TV nearly 16 years ago, this special marks the first time Underwood has served as an executive producer. "I've been lucky enough to work behind the scenes in a lot of other TV-type of ventures and just get to watch some of the best people in the business do their thing, so when we started talking about making this a special and all the people that we were going to work with, it just seemed like a good next step to be a producer," she says. "I'm always approving everything along the way and looking at setups. I have my two cents to offer anyway, so might as well make it official."

Producing any sort of TV project in 2020, as COVID-19 still runs rampant through the United States, presents its own problems, though. Underwood stresses that "in the whole pandemic situation, obviously everybody is first concerned with making everybody feel safe, and to continue moving forward [to] create something beautiful and timeless with all of the new parameters that we had to work with."

One of the highlights of the My Gift album is Underwood's rendition of "Little Drummer Boy" with her 5-year-old son, Isaiah Fisher. While he isn't singing on stage in the special ("I didn't want to overwhelm him too much," Underwood says), their collaboration is represented by "some fun behind-the-scenes stuff of the day we recorded. It's just so sweet."

The special also features a treat for fans of Underwood who have been with her since American Idol: In a full-circle moment, Rickey Minor, who served as music director on Idol during the season she was competing, reprises that role for My Gift.

"I have been able to work with Rickey kind of on and off throughout the years for various things," Underwood says. "He's just one of the top-tier people that award shows and things like that would hire, so I've seen him many times throughout the years, and he always comes out to my shows when we play in L.A." She adds, "I've literally known him for 16 years, and he's just so positive and upbeat and talented. He's one of my favorite parts of the special because he just dances around and has fun with and loves what he's doing. So it was nice to have familiar faces surrounding me.”

All in all, Underwood hopes that in such a tough year, when performers like her have been unable to connect with their fans in person due to safety precautions, this music special brings as much joy to the audience as it did to her. "You’ve got to figure out different ways to do things," she says. "You never know how the year is going to shake out, so it just felt nice to get on a stage and sing. And I hope people think, 'Wow, it's nice to sit and listen.'"

After over a year of waiting, and one delightful Emmy upset, Euphoria is finally back with a new episode.

On Monday, HBO dropped the trailer for the special “Rue” episode airing this weekend. It will be one of two episodes shot during the pandemic, meant to tide fans over until the cast and crew can complete season 2 as originally planned before COVID lockdown.

In the clip, we see this year’s Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Emmy winner Zendaya back as Rue, sitting in a diner as Otis Redding’s “Cigarettes And Coffee” plays. As several shots show her contemplating what could have been, the trailer shows flashbacks of the season one finale where Rue chose not to run away with Jules (Hunter Schafer), and was left feeling abandoned and driven to relapse.

The trailer ends with Rue’s sponsor, played by Colman Domingo, snapping her out of it, asking her, “Why’d you call me?”

For those who forgot the mysterious means by which the Euphoria finale ended, Rue’s relapse lead into a surreal original musical number suggesting Rue might’ve possibly overdosed again.

Given how in the trailer Rue is wearing the same clothes she wore at the very end of season one, it doesn’t look like this is a definitive answer as to whether or not Rue is still alive.

Who knows if the new episode will have answers about Rue’s fate, but Euphoria's “Rue” airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

Now that she has done her time and is a free woman, it seems Felicity Huffman is coming back to television.

EW has confirmed that the Emmy-winning actress has been cast in a new pilot for ABC inspired by the life of Susan Savage, owner of the minor-league baseball team the Sacramento River Cats. The pilot marks Huffman's first TV project since she pleaded guilty and served her sentence in the college admissions bribery scheme.

Produced by Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment, the pilot will be written by Becky Hartman Edwards (Switched at Birth) and costar Zack Gottsagen, the breakout star of the 2019 film The Peanut Butter Falcon.

Deadline first reported details of the half-hour, single-camera comedy, which will follow Huffman's character as she navigates life after her husband's sudden death, now being at the helm of a Triple-A ball club alongside her baseball devotee son, who has Down syndrome (Gottsagen).

Huffman, Savage, and Hartman Edwards will executive-produce the project with Kapital's Kaplan and Dana Honor, plus Artist First's Joel Zadak. Gottsagen will serve as a producer.

While the project only has a pilot production commitment, it makes sense for ABC to be the home of Huffman's first big TV gig after her involvement in the college admissions scandal given that she's made three Emmy-winning shows with the network: Sports Night, Desperate Housewives, and American Crime.

Jennifer Lopez is unveiling new music and looking better than ever.

As if things with the 51-year-old star couldn’t get any steamier than her performance with Maluma at the 2020 American Music Awards this past weekend, she just released the cover art for her new single “In the Morning,” which features her posing confidently in her birthday suit.

The image was dropped via her SMS distribution channel, meaning her fans got to give thanks early when they received a text showing them the jaw-dropping image.

The cover was shot by photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who have created stunning images of icons like Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna, and Angelina Jolie as well.

Lopez also recently dropped a video teaser for “In the Morning” that plays a snippet of the song, as well as a snap of what looks like the lyrics for it.

“In the Morning” will be available to stream on Friday.

The 2021 Grammy nominations were announced on Tuesday, and some would say they are just as weird as this year has been for music.

That being said, many artists who are getting their first nominations, or are getting recognized for projects that are very important to them are celebrating the Grammys news on social media.

While her “Savage” collaborator Beyoncé, who leads the nominations this year with nine, has not reacted to the good news yet, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion said in a statement: “Being nominated for a GRAMMY is something I’ve always dreamed about and it really is a true honor. I’m so grateful for all the love, support and recognition I have received over the last few months and as well as The Academy, more than anything I would like to thank my Hotties, who have helped make any of this possible. I love you all.”

She also posted a couple tweets to get her Hotties to celebrate with her.

Over in South Korea, K-pop kings BTS posted a video of their reactions to getting nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

While he still garnered quite a few nominations, singer Justin Bieber was one of the artists to express confusion at the Grammys for not categorizing his work on Changes as R&B like he’d intended.

Meanwhile, Jhene Aiko, a singer who was nominated in two R&B categories in addition to her first Album of the Year nomination, was exuberant about the honor.

She was quick to congratulate her partner Big Sean too, who was nominated for Best Rap Performance alongside Nipsey Hussle.
