Which celebrities are under the masks?

As for the talent behind the masks, we won't be certain until they're sent home, but at a press event for The Masked Dancer with the show's producers and cast, Tisdale teased that fans can expect a lot of surprises. "I can see how, if celebrities who haven't sung could be really kind of nervous to go out and sing, where dancing, I feel like everyone loves to dance," she said. "And so, I think it opens it up to even more people. It could be anybody."

Plestis added, "We are looking for people who are fans of the Masked brand, who want to go under a mask, and a lot of the people that we have on the show are actually skilled dancers and [dancing is] more of their secret hobby that they have. And we were able to have some incredible talent on the show." When asked if a former contestant from The Masked Singer could appear on the spin-off, Plestis didn't rule it out, saying "anything can happen."

The format will be familiar to Masked Singer fans — 10 costumed contestants will battle it out in two groups of five to start the season. They will get whittled down one-by-one to the Super Six, and eventually to a group of three finalists after that. The initial groups will be Group Fire — consisting of Exotic Bird, Tulip, Hammerhead, Disco Ball, and Cricket — and Group Ice, which will consist of Sloth, Ice Cube, Zebra, Cotton Candy, and Miss Moth.

See the exclusive portraits of all the costumes here. Like with The Masked Singer, keeping the masked dancers' identities a secret was paramount when it came to designing the costumes. But at the press event, Breen said they did have unique challenges for the new costumes. "They are lighter than most of the Singer ones. And our costume people worked really hard with the celebrities, knowing the range of movement they have, whether they could flip or whether they were going to bounce around, to make sure they could perform to the best of their ability in them," he said, adding, "I'm not going to say it's easy."

According to panelist Abdul, clues will be everywhere, from the stage settings, to the costumes, to the clue packages. New to The Masked Dancer will be a segment after the performances called "Word Up," where the panelists will be able to hear the contestants' unaltered voices. The dancer will only say one word, which also happens to be a clue as to who they are.

Yes, the first clues are out! Fox has teased that the celebrity competitors have amassed more than 38 million albums sold worldwide, 20 Emmy Award wins, 20 Grammy Award nominations, 10 World Dancing titles, five New York Times best-selling titles, four Olympic gold medals, and three Broadway show appearances.

Right now, at just nine episodes, The Masked Dancer is being billed as an "event," but the producers hope to do it again in the future. "I think we will hope it does [go on for more seasons], but now, it's an event," Breen said. "It's just nine episodes, which, in Masked Singer land, is a much shorter run. Obviously, we want to keep going forever, and I think there's the potential there. It's a really fun show. So, we want to keep going as long as it can."

For Rosamund Pike, playing bad is good fun.

Luckily for her, her latest film, I Care a Lot, allows her to be very bad indeed. In it, Pike plays the vicious and cunning Marla Grayson, a legal conservator who runs a lucrative scam on elderly clients with her partner, Fran (Eiza Gonzalez).

Pike says the dark satire, which hits Netflix Feb. 19, presented an intriguing challenge for her as a performer. "We were trying to work out how to achieve that tonal balance where you can play somebody who's awful, but they're still fun to watch," she tells EW.

To achieve that, Pike and writer-director J. Blakeson looked to films such as The Last Seduction, starring Linda Fiorentino — Pike says she's "kind of a bitch, but she's also really watchable and fun" — and To Die For, starring Nicole Kidman, for inspiration. "When a director has commanded the tone, these things are very, very delicious," she adds. "I just knew I had to push Marla, and I wasn't trying to win any admirers with her."

Another film Pike and Blakeson found particularly helpful was Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, which notably features a stockbroker making a huge fortune by defrauding wealthy investors out of millions of dollars. "That sort of wonderful rise of Leonardo DiCaprio's character, where you just see them just taking everyone for a ride and you just think, 'Well, you know, it's a brilliant scheme. Yeah, I have to give it to him.' I felt a bit like that when I read Marla," Pike says. "And I haven't seen a modern film with a woman [doing that] and running it sort of like a business."

                                  Seacia Pavao/Netflix

That business starts to fall apart when Marla's seemingly perfect new target (Dianne Wiest) is not who she appears to be, which pits her against a powerful gangster, played by Peter Dinklage. And it's at this point that Pike's character is forced to go from being a cunning con woman to something else entirely.

Pike is so convincing as Marla (and the similarly manipulative character of Amy Dunne in Gone Girl, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination) that it almost makes one worry she's a little too good at playing bad. But Pike says not to worry. "I have nothing in common with Marla Grayson, and I think that's why it was so freeing, to be honest," she admits. "I think there are characters where you can channel bits of yourself and spin your own character flaws and character strengths sort of around the qualities that you find in a character, and with Marla there was nothing, and therefore I kind of could completely let go and sort of just be free, I suppose." In fact, she adds with a laugh, "I think the only thing we have in common is that she looks like me."

                                  Credit:
                                  Seacia Pavao/Netflix

Lately, Pike has made a habit of playing courageous characters in biopics — more heroine than antihero. And while she says she loves the responsibility that comes with playing a real person such as journalist Marie Colvin (2018's A Private War) or scientist Marie Curie (2019's Radioactive) and "diving into that heart and soul," as she puts it, I Care a Lot gave her an opportunity to play someone completely without remorse.

"I think most people feel a tremendous degree of shame," Pike says. "I found it so intriguing that this was a woman — and I looked for it — and I thought, there's no shame here, there's no shame in this woman. She doesn't feel it. And she is blessed not to feel it, because it's one of the curses of being human, isn't it?"

Ultimately the British actress, who says she has a tendency to take herself too seriously, hopes audiences will be able to find the humor in Marla's ruthlessness. "You're talking about a very dark subject of people taking advantage of the most vulnerable people in our society, and yet J gives you permission to let that sink in while you're still laughing in kind of a mixture of appall and horror and delight," she says. "It's a complicated cocktail."

Complicated it may be, but it's a libation well served by this icy film. "It's obviously dealing with a very serious subject," Pike says, "but I think had it been treated as a sort of very serious drama, it might not have left you thinking about it in quite the way that this does."

The Jellyfish is swimming away from The Masked Singer after a brutal triple elimination on Wednesday night's semi-finals. The tentacled spectacle was unmasked to reveal snowboarder Chloe Kim, who became the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal when she won the women's snowboard halfpipe at just 17 years old at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Kim reminisced with EW about her time on the show, including her embarrassing first day on set, her special moment with panelist Ken Jeong, and more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You were a big fan of The Masked Singer before signing on for the show, right? How did you react when the producers reached out?
CHLOE KIM: Yes, so my parents actually were obsessed with the Korean version of the show, where it kind of started. So they would always watch it on Korean news channels and all of that. I would jump in and watch with them, when we were all together. And we have these karaoke nights, too, sometimes at our house. One time, my sister was like, "Oh, you should go on The Masked Singer!" And I was like, "Actually, I might be!" And she was so excited and she was asking me all these questions that I didn't even know the answer to. It was still kind of early, so it wasn't set in stone. It was fun for me, because I knew how much my family loves this show, and how much I love to watch it with them and how fun it was. I love all the reveals and everyone's performances, and the costumes are always so amazing. So I was really excited to be on.

And you had never had any formal vocal training, is that correct?
No, nothing.

Wow! You sounded great. That's so impressive.
Thank you, thank you. I love to sing. I taught myself how to play guitar, so I'd always travel with the guitar while I was on the road. Singing is actually really therapeutic for me when I'm stressed or something. But I've never taken it seriously, it's just been a hobby of mine. And I got on the show, [and they told me] I'm gonna get a vocal coach. I thought I was just going in there and doing my thing, you know? I didn't know I'd get so much support from the show —all of these awesome people to help me out and help me improve my voice and stuff. It was honestly the best experience ever. I'm so grateful.

One of your sponsors is Monster Energy, and your costume is green and glows. Was that a nod to your sponsor?
It kind of just worked out that way. I didn't really think about that. The costume was really pretty, and I love it so much. Fitting it was really cool, and it's amazing. The costume team, they're so incredibly talented. They were putting all these cool pieces in and we'd kind of bounce ideas off of each other. There were a lot of moving pieces, and it was really fun to watch everything come together so perfectly. I was hoping I'd get a cool costume and it really worked out.

As a fan, what surprised you the most about what happens behind the scenes of the show?
I think it was really cool the process of getting there and leaving. When I was a spectator just watching, the show says no one knows who the other singers are and no one knows anything. And I didn't necessarily think that was serious, but they give you these jackets, and you're super incognito and you have no idea who anyone is. They have these visors that are all blacked out, and you can't see anyone, you can't see through them at all. You might get a glimpse of like one hair strand that's out, but people are quick to tell you to tuck it back in and hide it.

My first day I went to the set, and because I didn't know, I literally went in ripped jeans. Everyone was like, "Oh my gosh, you can't wear those!" People can't know you're a girl or anything about you. Oh my gosh. I was so insecure about my rips in my jeans and I was furiously trying to cover my knees. I don't want people to recognize me from my knees! Then the next time I rolled up in sweats — we were all good.

What's more nerve-wracking, competing on The Masked Singer or in the Olympics?
Definitely competing on The Masked Singer. I know some people are gonna find that hard to believe, but I feel like going into the Olympics I had a lot of sources. I had a lot of people telling me what to expect, because a lot of people I competed with had been and had experienced it. I'm really good friends with [Olympic gymnast] Laurie Hernandez, she's one of my best friends. So I would call her and be like, "Yo, what's up? What's the deal? What is it gonna be like? Give me the full rundown from A to Z." With The Masked Singer, though, I don't know anyone who's been on it personally, so I never had anyone to ask. And I can't ask either, because no one can know that I'm on the show. So I was really nervous about that, because I'm going in blind. I had no idea what to expect, but it was so fun. I highly recommend being on it. To anyone out there who's considering being on it, do it.

You had a special moment with panelist Ken Jeong during your reveal. Tell me about that.
Yeah, so I love Ken. I really respect him and his career. I think he's hilarious, and he's a fellow Korean American, which is awesome. We definitely bonded over that, and it was a super special moment for me especially because I just really appreciate Ken and am inspired by him and love everything about him. We just totally had this heart to heart, which is really cool. That was probably one of my favorite moments of being on the show.

After this, would you consider signing a record deal?
I don't know, maybe! I don't know if anyone wants me like that, but if they do, come my way. I'm down. I'm down to drop a few bangers.

In one of the more shocking eliminations in the show's history, The Masked Singer said giddy up to the Seahorse before the finals.

The sequined fish with powerful and versatile vocals was revealed to be two-time Grammy winner Tori Kelly. Ahead, the gospel artist and former American Idol semi-finalist reveals what she would have sung in the Masked Singer finale, why she was initially hesitant to do the show, and she gives EW the lowdown on her new Christmas album.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Why did you say yes to doing The Masked Singer?
TORI KELLY: So they asked me to do it, and I'm gonna be honest, at first I was like, wait, that show is crazy. I don't know if I can do it — it's really out there and wild. After giving it some thought, I realized that it could be a cool opportunity to kind of show many different sides to me, really, and kind of show my alter ego a little bit and have fun with the songs. So after a little bit of thinking it through, I got really excited about it. So I said yes.

Your costume was so beautiful, but the panelists made a good point that it doesn't have a tail. Did it ever have one? The show is usually so fond of its costumes with tails.
Thanks. The costume team is just incredible. I was obsessed with them. And I don't think it originally had a tail. I just know when I saw the sketch of it when they kind of presented it to me, I thought it was cool, but I didn't realize how sparkly and amazing it would be in person. So it wasn't until I went to the fitting and kind of tried it on and saw it in person that I was just blown away. I believe this is the first time they were experimenting with airbrushing too on a mask, which I thought was really awesome. [There was] so much detail. I remember they were literally adding rhinestones every episode, like every time I put the outfit on, it was like, oh, there's more rhinestones in this little corner near my hand! Every single centimeter of my body was covered in rhinestones. So that was fun for me to notice little things like that every time.

I was stunned that you were sent home this week. Were you disappointed?
I mean, it's hard to say disappointed because it's just such a fun experience as a whole. And I think there is a little part of me too, right when they said I was going home, I was like, oh, okay, cool. I get to show people that it's me. It's such a unique show. So it's hard to be so sad when I feel like I got to show so many different sides of me. Each of my song choices were really, really particular actually. From the Rihanna song, I wanted to show just kind of the sassier side of me and really focus on my strut in that song. For the Britney [Spears] song, I love doing vocal impressions, so I thought that was a fun opportunity to kind of throw them off a little bit and try to sound like Britney a little bit. Even doing the Bruno [Mars] song, the last song I did, I wanted to just dance. I wanted to do choreography and kind of step out of my comfort zone in that way because I'm so used to being seen with a guitar. So yeah, I guess to answer your question, I don't think disappointed is the right word, but it's just a whole mixture of feelings. You feel kind of exposed when you take the mask off. It's just weird because you're like, "Wait! You're not supposed to see who I am!" It's a whole mixture of things and it was really, really unique — I guess that's the best word to describe that feeling.

What would you have sung in the finale if you had made it?
I was thinking of doing a Sam Smith song, actually. [I wanted to do their] song "Latch" with Disclosure because I just wanted to, if I made it to the finale, just kind of have like a party song and just have fun with it and jump around and go crazy on stage. So I think that was going to be an option for the finale.

How did you feel when Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger finally guessed it was you?
Ironically, the two musicians ended up finally guessing me and I've actually met both of them before. So they were kind of like, "I can't believe I didn't realize it was you!" I've literally sang with both of them before. So that felt kind of good, though, because that was my goal, to really throw them off and and try to make them think of other people. So I feel like I accomplished that with the panelists.

Your fans were a different story. They clocked you immediately! Did you follow along with the theories online at all?
Oh, yeah. I mean, I would be lying if I said I didn't go on Twitter and look at all the comments, and Instagram and all of that. I mean, I kind of had a feeling that my fans are gonna know right away that it's me. I mean, they were finding like old videos of little hand movements that I would do and put it right next to the Seahorse clips and they're dissecting the clues, but they knew right away. I can't even try to hide from them, even when I would do the little impression stuff they knew. So yeah, I guess that's a good thing that my fans know me. I can't hide. So I'll take that as a good thing. [Laughs.]

Who was your "Spiritual Advisor" in your third clue package?
That was Kirk Franklin actually. We actually did a whole gospel album together. And he's become not just a producer to me, but he's really become like a mentor, him and his wife, to my husband and I. I can call him and ask for advice on anything. And I just really value who he is in my life. So yeah, he seemed like a good choice to kind of have on there and make a little cameo about. I think he was talking about when we first worked together and everything. That was a fun little test.

Now that you've performed with all of the finalists, did you find yourself trying to guess who else was on the show with you?
Yeah, I mean I had some idea… I was definitely trying to guess and I was trying to play the game with everyone else. I had some idea, but we'll see. That's the whole fun of the show, you know?

You've been busy this year. Tell me about what you've been working on lately.
I put out a Christmas album this year, so that's been really fun and something I've always wanted to do. And I mean, ironically, this year of all the years as crazy as it's been, it was the year to do it. I've been home and I have a recording studio at home. So it just kind of happened and I'm so proud of how it turned out. I got to record it all with the legendary Babyface. And we did it all remotely like on Facetime and emails and stuff. I'm just so thankful that I get to even put out music and continue to create during such a crazy time. That's kind of my Christmas gift to everyone this year.

In a crushing triple elimination, the Popcorn was revealed to be none other than three-time Grammy-nominated '80s hitmaker Taylor Dayne. Ahead of the reveal, the singer-songwriter opened up to EW about her season-long bit of flirting with host Nick Cannon, what it was like having her friend Leah Remini on the show, why she chose the Popcorn costume, and more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: First off, what about the Popcorn costume spoke to you?
TAYLOR DAYNE: Well, costume design came to me with a couple of looks, and we were looking at them and talking about them. One look in particular was kind of obvious to me, meaning, over my years working with costuming and things, and I liked her, I thought she was sexy. We'll leave it at that. Then Popcorn was just something far more unique, and considering the year we're in, I mean, this is about five months ago and I had to make some quick decisions. But this is an election year, we've been in a pandemic, and I just needed something joyful, and she was joyful. She was more humanistic. She also had that face. And knowing the way I sing, which is powerful, I also knew that it was going to be hidden behind this mask with those big beautiful eyes. I felt she had a presence to her that was joyful, as well as knowing me [and I'm] a little sassy, sexy, but also playful. And that's why I chose her, and she was also really just glittery and glam.

Did you find it difficult to maneuver around in that costume? Yours seemed like it maybe was one of the more moveable costumes.
We had to tone her down. At first her bottom was a lot more difficult — it has a drum on the bottom. Originally it was supposed to go down a little longer and be a little tighter and tougher. But I had them put it to the knees so she was more movable. But if you see what's going on on the top, there's a whole bunch of kernels, and that ain't going anywhere. It was hooked on basically — it's like having a case of kernels on. It's not easy. And then you can't see. You know when a man says, "Oh, I'm so fat, I can't see my blank?" Yeah, I basically couldn't see my feet. You can't see where you're walking, so they have to plant you on your station, which is a little difficult, but can be done through all the choreography. So this last one I went for it. You kind of have to memorize where your marks are. You can see maybe two feet out in front of you, and I had vision from one eye, basically. You can't play at home with these toys. [Laughs] No, no, everybody has their own challenges. I imagine the Crocodile was hitting people with his tail. Everybody has their challenges, trust me. But it was very ornate and beautiful and just so perfect.

And speaking of your last performance, you sang Tina Turner's "Better Be Good to Me." Did you have any idea that they'd be guessing you were Tina? What did you make of that?
They did that from the start of the show, from the very first song I did! No, I had no idea. Like [my performance of Pink's] "What About Us" — how is that Tina? I just brought it down with Tina because I did write a Tina Turner song — I wrote a song for me that Tina recorded — so that's funny.

Popcorn flirted with host Nick Cannon throughout the season. Tell me where that came from.
I've watched the show before in the past, and I think he's the cutest, the funniest. I don't know, it just was so easy to do. Where did it come from? It ain't hard honey. [Laughs.] He's right there bored while listening to Ken [Jeong] for 20 minutes. I just figured I'd help him out. Let's just get some fun up there. That's Popcorn. That was all Popcorn.

The friend that popped up in your third clue package was Leah Remini, right? Why won't you sing at her karaoke parties?
Yeah. My lovely Leah. Bossing me around like she always does. They made her look like a Russian babushka. [mimicking Remini] "Just sing, come to my house and sing, just do it." She was so ahead of the karaoke curve. It's ridiculous. She has a karaoke machine in her living room. I'm like, "What is that for?" She goes, "Just sing." Like, what does that mean? She was like, "Just pick it up and do it. If you come to my house, you got to sing."

Well now you can just tell her to watch you on The Masked Singer!
She doesn't take any of that kind of direction, you understand that, right? [Laughs]

This morning it was announced that The Masked Singer is coming back for a fifth season. What advice do you have for the new contestants?
Do some cardio before you do the show because you're going to be hot under the mask. And get ready for an amazing time. It's an amazing, amazing experience, but yeah, get your cardio down.

What's next for you?
Right now I have my Christmas single, "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," that just came out. My book is out. Everything's online. And getting ready for the holidays here, goodness gracious. I'm working on new music right now — new music for the new year!

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Taylor Swift has given fans something else to be thankful for: a Folklore concert film!

Officially dubbed Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, the film, which launched on Disney+ in the wee hours of Wednesday, follows Swift and her co-producers Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff as she performs all 17 songs off of her latest album and the trio provides all the stories and secrets behind each track. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver also joins in the fun (remotely, from Wisconsin, due to the pandemic) to perform "Exile" with Swift.

It's the first time Swift has performed all the songs live, and also the first time all the collaborators have been together in one place since the album was produced remotely during quarantine earlier this year. Naturally, a lot of tea was spilled and secrets revealed. Here, EW breaks down the all of the things we learned from the film.

                    William Bowery Unmasked

When Folklore released, fans were quick to point out that a mysterious figure named William Bowery helped co-write two tracks: "Exile" and "Betty." There was one problem, though — Bowery doesn't seem to exist. This led to rampant speculation that he could be Swift's boyfriend, Joe Alwyn; her brother, Austin Swift; or perhaps another singer-songwriter in the industry. Swift and her co-producers have remained mum on his true identity, until now. In the film, Swift reveals it's none other than her longtime boyfriend. "So it's Joe, as we know. And Joe plays piano beautifully and he's always just playing and making things up and creating things," she says. Swift goes on to explain that she heard Alwyn singing and playing the first verse of what would later become "Exile," which is sung by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon in the final version, and she was "entranced" and asked if they could work on that song together. And when it became clear that the song should be a duet, Alwyn and Swift both wanted Vernon involved, so she pitched it to Dessner, who reached out to Vernon, and the rest is songwriting history.

For "Betty," Swift says she overheard Alwyn singing the fully realized chorus of the song from another room and approached him about writing the song together. "So, he was singing the chorus of it, and I thought it sounded really good from a man's voice, from a masculine perspective," she says, adding that that's where she got the idea to do the song from a guy's perspective.

                    A Truly DIY Album

Swift built a recording studio in her house because all of the recording studios were closed on account of the pandemic. Footage in the film shows her makeshift studio — which she fittingly dubbed the Kitty Committee Studios — and her recording engineer Laura Sisk freaking out about the set-up. She also didn't tell her label about the new record until right before the release. In a forthcoming interview with EW, Swift explains, "It was a very do-it-yourself experience, even down to my management team who created all of the art, everything. We created absolutely everything in advance, every lyric video, every individual album package, and then we called our label a week in advance and said, 'Here's what we have,' and showed them PDF files of all the things we already had." In fact, it was the first album she made where only a very select few people knew about it in advance. "The only people who knew were the people I was making it with, my boyfriend, my family, and a small management team. That's the smallest number of people I've ever had know about something," she says.

The first song Swift wrote for the album was "My Tears Ricochet," which also happens to be the only one on the album she wrote solo. In the film, she says it's one of the saddest she's ever written, and Antonoff remarks that it's one of her best songs, which is probably why it got the coveted fifth spot on Folklore. Longtime Swifties know that Swift reserves the fifth track on an album for the song she feels is the most emotional.

Speaking with EW, Swift likened it to a 15-year relationship — be it personal or professional — that ends messily. "That was what started to happen [to me], so I wrote 'My Tears Ricochet' and I was using a lot of imagery that I had conjured up while comparing a relationship ending to when people end an actual marriage, and all of a sudden this person that you trusted more than anyone in the world is the person that can hurt you the worst."

                    A Teenage Love Triangle, Explained

Three songs on the album — "Betty," "August," and "Cardigan" — follow the same three characters through a teenage love triangle, told from their different perspectives. Although two of the characters are named, Betty and James, the name of the "other woman" with whom James cheats on Betty is never explicitly stated. In the movie, Swift reveals that she calls her Augusta or Augustine in her head. With "August," which grew out of a note on the singer's phone that had the lyric “meet me behind the mall” on it, Swift says she doesn’t see the other girl as the villain. "Everybody has feelings and wants to be seen and loved, and Augustine, that’s all she wanted," she says. And — surprise! — Swift thinks that James and Betty do actually end up together. “In my head, she ends up with him but he really put her through it,” she says. In a later part of the film, Swift emphatically calls James "a fool" and, well, she's not wrong.

This is the first album of hers that is not largely autobiographical in some way, and Swift says that came from a place of her watching a ton of movies and reading books and thinking about those characters. “I was kind of outside of my own personal stuff. I think that’s been my favorite thing about this album is that it’s allowed to exist on its own merit without it just being, ‘Oh, people are listening to this because it tells them something that they could read in a tabloid.’”

                    A Response to Scooter Braun?

Fans have speculated that "Mad Woman" and its themes of female rage could be a reference to Swift's ongoing public feud with music mogul Scooter Braun, which you can catch up on here. While Swift doesn't outright confirm this in Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, she does confirm it's based on recent personal experience.

“It’s a person who makes me feel, or tries to make me feel, like I’m the offender by having any kind of defense to his offenses," she says. "It’s like, ‘Oh, I have absolutely no right to respond or I’m crazy. I have no right to respond or I’m angry. I have no right to respond or I’m out of line.’” She adds that the musical track Dessner sent her provided "the musical bed" for her that allowed her to figure out how to put what she'd been feeling into a song.

Another song on the album could refer to the battle over her old masters. The last track, "Hoax," which she says embodies the album’s themes, is about more than one scenario. “One is about love, and one is about a business thing that really hurt, and one is about a sort of relationship that I consider to be family, but that really hurt,” she says.

                    Inspiration Behind the Songs

Throughout the film, Swift frequently explained the inspiration to her songs. The album's opener, "The 1," is both about updating a former lover on how you are currently and about where she sees herself creatively. With "Mirrorball," Swift explains that she started with the imagery of a mirrorball, but it came to represent a metaphor for her celebrity and for people who feel they need to be "on" constantly. "Seven" came out of her pondering kids throwing tantrums at the grocery store, and that point in everyone's life when you grow out of doing that. She confirmed that "This Is Me Trying" is about addiction, with the first verse being about "someone who is in a life crisis and trying and failing in a relationship," and the second verse follows someone who has a lot of potential, but has feels they have lost in life and starts drinking. One of the more autobiographical songs on the album, "Invisible Strings," was inspired by her sending a baby gift to an ex-boyfriend (presumably Joe Jonas, who welcomed a baby with wife Sophie Turner earlier this year). “I just remember thinking this is a full signifier that life is great,” she says.

“Epiphany” almost started as a sports song because she had been watching Michael Jordan miniseries The Last Dance, but she moved away from that as she thought more about her grandfather’s war experiences. Her imagined experiences of COVID first responders informed the second verse. “Peace” is about how she wants to have a normal life but she can’t stop some of it from happening. "So this song was basically like, is the stuff I can control enough to sort of block out the things that I can’t?" And she says it brings her, ahem, peace to know that people have related to the song in other ways.

At the end of the film, Swift confirmed that bonus track "The Lakes," which sees her romanticizing a future in which she runs away with her "muse" to the U.K.'s Lakes District and retires, is the real end to Folklore. "'Hoax' as the ending song for the record I thought was interesting for a couple weeks, but then I wanted to actually come in with the real last song of the record, with is ‘The Lakes,'" she says. "[It] shows you exactly what the overarching theme of the whole album is — of trying to escape, having something you wanna protect, trying to protect your own sanity and saying, ‘Look, they did this hundreds of years ago. I’m not the first person who’s felt this way.
Week 1: Sun's version of Lizzo's "Cuz I Love You" made us feel like we were truly walking on sunshine. This performance kicked off the season, and it's no wonder — it was one of the best vocal performances on the show to date. Belting and sustaining those high notes was a piece of cake for Sun, who made the whole thing look all too easy.

Week 2: Looks like Sun has some major competition! In her first performance, Seahorse proved she's in it to win it with her incredible vocals that were a perfect match for Rihanna's hit. Choreography has been rather light on the show up to this point, but she still brought the energy, and those blow-up cactus costumes worn by the background dancers were hard to resist. Seahorse won this week by a landslide.

Week 3: The judges praised this performance as one of their favorite vocals from a female singer ever on the show, and we have to agree. Sun once again belted her way through all the high notes, bringing the emotion along the way. The gorgeous set decorations and costumes on the backup dancers didn't hurt either. Shoutout to Snow Owls, who bring the adorable duet game week after week, though.

Week 4: (In best Ken Jeong impression): Ok, hear me out. Yes, Seahorse had the most astounding vocals tonight, Serpent's smooth voice could melt butter, Whatchamacallit brought the rap game, and Baby Alien boldly pulled double duty as a puppeteer and singer. But, after several weeks of tamer choreography and less theatrics overall, Crocodile kicked off the week with camp galore, fun choreography (was anyone else concerned about the back-up dancers meeting the wrong end of that tail?), and he managed to sound good while completely throwing his voice for a second week in a row. An effort like that deserves a shoutout.

Week 5: After what seemed like the longest wait in Masked Singer history (thanks, World Series!), we finally met Group C, and they sure did bring the party. Mushroom, though, brought the emotion with their goosebump-inducing performance of "This Woman's Work," which was sung entirely in falsetto. That's not an easy thing to do well, but they spore did nail it. We're looking forward to more entrancing performances from this fungi.

Week 6: It came down to Mushroom and Jellyfish this week, and while we loved both, Jellyfish gets the edge here for overcoming her first episode nerves and bringing a fresh spin to a classic. Her vocals were perfectly suited to Cline's song, and really allowed her to showcase her vocal chops. Her voice has a nice sultry edge to it, and she definitely played that up here.
Week 7: This week gave us the Group A Finals, and you could say everybody brought their A game accordingly. It's just so hard to resist Sun's vocals, especially when she switches things up a bit. This week, she brought a sultry-rock vibe to the stage, and even rocked some pants to go with it! The nightmare-inducing centaur things were weird, and we're not entirely sure why they were there, but Sun can't be faulted for that.

Week 8: Season 4 is rapidly turning out to be the season of Britney Spears! First, Croc gave us his all-falsetto version of "Toxic," and now Seahorse has given us a truly great Spears impression with "...Baby One More Time." Not only did she sound just like the pop star, she also managed to elevate the original by taking some of those notes to the stratosphere. It allowed her to horse around a little, and the performance was great enough to sea her through to the Super Six.

Everyone’s favorite fungi showed yet another part of their range in this smackdown performance, which also featured a richer tone than we’ve seen in the past. It was a shorter performance by definition but it packed a punch.
