There was no comeback for Tom Brady in The Match.

And no hints from Aaron Rodgers about where he’ll play during the upcoming NFL season — despite some goading on that subject during the nearly six-hour round.

The pairing of Rodgers and Bryson DeChambeau proved too much for Brady and Phil Mickelson in The Match on Tuesday at The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Mont.

Brady, whose golf balls were decorated with his Super Bowl-winning numbers (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, LIII, LV), sounded confident even while trailing on the back nine.

“We got them right where we want them,” Brady said, figuring this was a more compelling storyline compared to holding a late-round lead. “Everyone is going to talk about us being down three with five to play.”

Not really.

Rodgers and DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open champion, won 3 and 2 in the modified alternate-shot format in the made-for-TV celebrity event on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course located at 7,500-feet elevation.

Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady high five after winning the third hole.

Getty Images for The Match

Nothing seemed to faze Rodgers, who was hounded from the playing group and the TV studio crew about his future with the Green Bay Packers.

“Aaron, who’s leader of the Packers — I think,” Brady said.

Rodgers rebutted at one point in apparent reference to Brady’s age: “I’m just talking to him to see if he’s still playing.”

By the 16th hole, when Brady-Mickelson were in a desperate situation and Brady stood over a long putt, Mickelson made reference to Green Bay’s decision in the NFC Championship Game against Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I equate this to fourth-and-3 and we’re down eight,” Mickelson said. “I don’t think we should kick a field goal. We should go for it.”

The words didn’t matter. Brady rolled a nice putt but missed. Then Rodgers rolled in the match-clinching putt.

Earlier, Rodgers didn’t even budge when television cameras provided footage of a bear on the course — with that leading to a conversation topic as to whether Rodgers would be taking snaps against Green Bay’s division rival, the Chicago Bears, this year.

Brady and Rodgers tossed a football next to the 11th tee box.

The Rodgers-DeChambeau pairing won the first three holes of the back nine to break a tie. Rodgers had two of the birdie putts.

“I don’t know why I brought my putter,” DeChambeau said. “This dude is making everything. … This guy just rolls it in every time.”

At one point, the Rodgers-DeChambeau team used Rodgers’ tee shots on six of seven holes.

There were interesting twists during the round. For instance, the often deliberate DeChambeau pointed out that the Brady-Mickelson team was disrupting the pace of play as Mickelson was giving extensive putting instructions to Brady.

DeChambeau chipped in on the first hole.

With the match ending after 16 holes, the big-hitting DeChambeau never got to attack the 777-yard 17th hole.

Mickelson and Brady were a repeat pairing from a previous event that resulted in a loss to Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning.

Major League Baseball officials hope to meet soon with a woman who told police she was sexually assaulted by Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer, ESPN reported Sunday.

Bauer was placed on seven-day administrative leave after the woman, who admittedly had consensual sex with Bauer, reported that he choked her, rendering her unconscious, and struck her in the face and elsewhere on her body.

She was granted a temporary restraining order against Bauer last week, with a hearing set for July 23.

MLB is in the midst of an investigation into the alleged actions of Bauer, 30. So far, investigators have spoken with the woman’s attorney but not to her in person, ESPN reported.

Bauer has denied the allegations of assault.

Trevor Bauer

Getty Images

ESPN said part of the investigation involves looking to see whether similar incidents have been reported in the past that could have violated MLB’s domestic violence policy.

A timeline for speaking with Bauer has not been set by MLB. Should Bauer’s leave expire without the investigation being completed, he could be put on an indefinite leave, ESPN reported.

Police in Pasadena, Calif., where Bauer lives and where the alleged assaults took place, also are conducting an investigation.

Bauer won the National League Cy Young Award as a member of the Cincinnati Reds last year before signing a three-year, $102 million free agent deal with the Dodgers in February. He is 8-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 17 starts for Los Angeles this year.

He was scheduled to start Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals. Instead, the Dodgers made it a bullpen game and used eight pitchers to win 5-1 and complete a four-game road sweep of the Nationals.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested Saturday and charged with two counts related to domestic battery, booking records show.

The database for inmate records of Fulton County, Georgia, showed Ozuna was arrested by the Sandy Springs (Ga.) Police Department on one count of battery — family violence and one count of aggravated assault strangulation.

ESPN reported that Major League Baseball plans to open an investigation into the incident.

Ozuna did not join the Braves on a road trip this weekend. He was placed on the injured list Friday after he fractured two fingers when sliding into third base during Tuesday’s game.

In June 2020, Ozuna’s wife, Genesis, was arrested after hitting him in the face with a soap dish that left him with a small laceration, multiple reports said.

James Van Riemsdyk scored two power-play goals and the Philadelphia Flyers held on for a 3-2 victory over the host New York Rangers Thursday night.

Van Riemsdyk entered Thursday with one goal in his previous 19 games and recorded his third multi-goal game of the season by scoring twice on deflections.

He scored a fluky goal late in the second period and wound up going to the locker room after tying the game.

Van Riemsdyk tied it when he deflected a shot from Travis Konecny into the net when the puck went off his face. The play sent him to the locker room for the final 4:04 of the second and the first few minutes of the third but he returned wearing a full facial shield and gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead a little over halfway into a four-minute power play.

After Kevin Hayes cleanly won an offensive zone faceoff from Mika Zibanejad, he slid the puck to Ivan Provorov. Provorov lifted a wrist shot from the right point and Van Riemsdyk deflected the puck over goaltender Igor Shesterkin’s left arm with 9:31 remaining.

Jakub Voracek added insurance about 3 1/2 minutes after Van Riemsdyk’s second goal and Provorov added two assists as the Flyers (21-18-7, 49 points) avenged last month’s 9-0 loss in New York.

Rangers’ Zac Jones tries to catch up to the Flyers’ Nolan Patrick.

Getty Images

Defenseman Brendan Smith scored the first goal for the Rangers (23-18-6, 52 points), who dropped their second straight following four straight wins over the New Jersey Devils and fell eight points behind the Boston Bruins for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division.

Artemi Panarin made it a one-goal game with two minutes left with a slap shot from the left point through traffic that sailed over goalie Brian Elliot’s right shoulder shortly after the Rangers pulled Shesterkin.

Elliott made 33 saves, including point-blank stops on Pavel Buchnevich and Ryan Strome after Panarin made it a one-goal game.

Shesterkin also stopped 33 shots and stuffed Joel Farabee on a penalty shot in the final minute of the second to keep the game tied.

Smith opened the scoring with 10:05 remaining in the first period shortly after a power play ended when he parked himself in the right faceoff circle, got a cross-ice pass from K’Andre Miller and lifted a slap shot over Elliott’s stick.

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of former Giants backup running back Wayne Gallman to a one-year deal, while NFL Network reported that the team also added defensive end Arden Key.

The Giants selected Gallman in the fourth round of the 2017 draft, and the back played there for four years. Used primarily as a change-of-pace back during his time in New York, he ended up starting 10 games in 2020 following an early season injury to Saquon Barkley.

Gallman, 26, led the team in rushing attempts (147), rushing yards (682) and rushing touchdowns (six) — all single-season career highs.

With the Giants, Gallman rushed for 1,444 yards on 338 attempts and scored 11 touchdowns — nine rushing and two receiving. He joins a running back room in San Francisco led by Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert.

Key, who turns 24 next month, was waived last week by the Las Vegas Raiders after three seasons with the team. The 2018 third-round pick from LSU has managed just three sacks in his career, including zero over 14 games in 2020.

He has 49 career tackles (eight for loss) and 26 quarterback hits. He played 40 percent of the team’s defensive snap counts last season.

Terms of both deals were not disclosed.

Artemi Panarin collected two goals and an assist as the New York Rangers cruised to a 4-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, shutting out their division rival for the second game in a row.

Panarin posted his third multi-goal game of the season. He has 10 goals in 18 games since returning March 13 from a two-week absence for personal reasons.

Defensemen Jacob Trouba and Ryan Lindgren scored in the opening 6:39 as the Rangers improved to 11-4-3 in their past 18 games. The Rangers remain four points behind the Boston Bruins for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division.

Colin Blackwell added a career-high three assists while Ryan Strome set up Panarin’s goals as the Rangers beat the Devils for the fourth straight meeting.

Igor Shesterkin had an easy 16-save night to follow up his first career shutout, when he stopped 27 shots Tuesday as the Rangers beat the Devils 3-0. He improved to 6-2-2 since returning from a groin injury.

Artemi Panarin scores his second goal in the second period of the Rangers’ 4-0 win over the Devils.

AP

The Devils played without leading scorers Pavel Zacha and Jesper Bratt, who both sat out because of undisclosed injuries. New Jersey lost its fourth straight and fell to 2-8-2 in its past 12 games.

New Jersey goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood allowed four goals on 33 shots.

The Rangers produced one of their best periods of the season and held a 3-0 lead through 20 minutes.

Just 47 seconds in, Trouba opened the scoring with a rising wrist shot from the right faceoff circle. The tally was set up by a drop pass from Blackwell, who gained possession following a no-look pass by Mika Zibanejad.

Lindgren’s first goal in 98 games since Nov. 10, 2019, came on a wrister from the left circle after getting a slick pass from Panarin with 13:21 remaining in the opening period. It was just the second career goal for Lindgren in 108 games.

Panarin made it 3-0 with eight minutes left in the first when he hammered a slap shot from the left circle over Blackwood while on a two-on-one with Strome. He got his second goal with 7:09 left in the second by converting an easy tap-in at the right side of the crease after getting a pass from Strome, who chased down a loose puck.

Rangers rookie Vitali Kravtsov nearly added his first career goal midway through the third period, but after the Devils challenged, he was ruled offside.

Artemi Panarin had a goal and three assists and the New York Rangers rode a four-goal first period Tuesday to an 8-4 pasting of the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

Adam Fox had a goal and two assists for the Rangers, and Colin Blackwell, Kaapo Kakko, Mika Zibanejad, Ryan Strome and Pavel Buchnevich added a goal and an assist apiece.

Rookie Alexis Lafreniere also scored his sixth goal of the year for New York, which is 3-0-1 in its past four games. Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 41 saves.

Mike Matheson had a goal and assist, and Jared McCann, Jake Guentzel and Brian Dumoulin also scored for Pittsburgh, which dropped it second straight.

Tristan Jarry, after a two-game injury absence, allowed four goals on 11 shots in the first before being relieved by Casey DeSmith, who made 10 saves.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead at 1:35 of the first when Blackwell’s pass banked in off Matheson. Zibanejad scored on a rebound at 7:28 to push it to 2-0.

On a Rangers power play, Panarin lofted a shot through a screen at 9:58 for a 3-0 lead.

The Penguins answered 40 seconds later, also on a power play, as McCann scored from the top of the left circle through Fox’s legs and under Shesterkin’s pads.

With 17.7 seconds left in the first, Strome scored from above the right dot on a short-side screened shot during another power play to make it 4-1.

Lafreniere made it 5-1 at 12:20 of the second on a severe-angle shot that got behind DeSmith and was knocked over the goal line by Pittsburgh’s John Marino. Sixteen seconds later, Matheson closed it to 5-2 on a rising shot from the left circle.

The Rangers got their third power-play goal at 6:10 of the third, on Kakko’s tip of a Trouba shot for a 6-2 lead.

Matheson’s backhand pass set up Guentzel’s one-timer to close it to 6-3 at 8:04 of the third.

At 10:22 of the third, Fox, who extended his point streak to 11 games, scored short-handed, and Buchnevich scored 19 seconds later to boost it to 8-3.
