The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star is no stranger to a curve-hugging frock or a cleavage-baring ensemble. In fact, she’s been embracing sexy styles since day one. Prior to the Skims founder’s stint of dressing covered in head-to-toe, she continued her decade-plus-long streak of fusing high fashion and sex appeal. So in honor of the actress’ 40th birthday, it only felt appropriate to take a look back at her fashion evolution through the years. Because while she’s gradually become more polished and her clothes have gotten more couture, Markle has had a defined sense of style since she stepped into the spotlight. 

The former Suits star has been acting since the early 2000’s — with credits that include General Hospital and A Lot Like Love. But, it wasn’t until 2006, when she became a game show model on Deal or No Deal, that her red carpet journey truly began.

During her briefcase-carrying days, the California native favored plunging necklines and sequins. She wasn’t afraid of showing a little skin either, especially at fashion events. 

During New York Fashion Week in 2013, she even gave a glimpse at her toned abs, wearing a Herve Leger by Max Azria two-piece ensemble. Then, during the Vogue Fashion Fund Awards in 2015, she wore a silver Misha Nonoo mini, which featured a plunging neckline. 

As she found her way into the royal family though, she swapped out her playful party clothes for more sophisticated and tailored looks from designers like Burberry, Marchesa and Dolce & Gabbana. 

With her coat game kicked into high gear and layering being of utmost importance, the actress made sure to mesh her personal style with royal fashion, staying on top of trends and turning heads. 

She set the tone for her style early on, proving that she can rock casual attire just as well as a gorgeous gown. During the 2017 Invictus Games, Archewell founder rocked a chic white blouse with a pair of ripped jeans. 

Fast forward to December of that year, and Markle’s made a major statement in a Ralph & Russo ruffled gown for her engagement photos. 

In the time that followed, she proved that monochromatic ensembles and dresses are her go-to, especially while pregnant. 

During the Spotify event in February, Markle, who was pregnant with Lilibet at the time, played a bit with prints, wearing a lemon Dolce and Gabbana dress.

Normally, the royal is sporting a prim and proper suit or some denim with a cashmere sweater. In his younger years though, he had much more laidback approach to fashion.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles dressed him in shorts all the time — rain or shine, winter or summer. The proclivity towards shorter hems is a decision that’s in line British Royal Code.

Once his toddler years were far behind him however, Prince William began to embrace crewnecks and khakis. Fast forward to his first day at St. Andrews University, and the royal was snapped in what’s one of his most iconic looks to date. He donned a pair of light wash jeans and a navy sweater over a blue button down. The outfit was equal parts casual and chic. 

By the time 2010 rolled around and the Duke got engaged to his now wife Duchess Kate, royal styler watchers began to see more and more suits from the royal, typically navy or black in color.  

Then, when he welcomed his first son, Prince George, in 2013, his style took a bit of a turn. While he still broke out a suit for formal engagements, Prince William also embraced more laidback looks — especially when stepping out in front of the hospital.

When introducing his children to the world in 2013, 2015 and 2018 respectively, Prince William decided to wear blue. First a button down, then a cashmere sweater and, later, a blazer.

As his kids grew older, Prince William unquestionably picked up some matchy-matchy tendencies, too. During a 2021 outing to Manor Farm with Duchess Kate, the Duke matched his partner’s outfit to a T, wearing a green jacket, brown boots and navy pants. 

Later that year, he twinned with his eldest son while attending the Euro soccer championship. Both donned matching navy suits and red and white striped ties.

Because whether she was hitting the gym in bike shorts and a crewneck sweatshirt or dancing with John Travolta at the White House in a now-iconic midnight blue gown, the royal was always setting trends and making stylish statements. 

She set the tone for her fashion-forward reign when she she married Prince Charles at the St Paul’s Cathedral in London on July 29, 1981. 

Wearing an ivory taffeta gown designed by Elizabeth Emanuel, there’s no question that it was the puff-sleeve dress seen around the world. The grand number was embroidered with sequins, lace and 10,000 pearls. Add a 25-foot train to the mix and the dress was so voluminous, it barely fit in the coach.

As a royal, she continued to step out in wow-worthy outfits. For casual events she often opted for the super ‘80s style skirt suits, which were equal parts professional and stylish. 

But she didn’t just slip on any old outfit when stepping out. In fact, she heavily considered her audience when choosing her attire. 

Matthew Storey, the fashion curator responsible for Royal Style in the Making, exclusively told Us Weekly that Princess Diana’s blue floral dress was her go-to when visiting children. 

“She called it her caring dress. It’s this blue dress with bright flowers on it and it was one of the princess’ favorite dresses. She wore it over and over again. So much so that the press said, ‘Give it a rest. Stop wearing it,” he said to Stylish. 

Needless to say, Diana didn’t listen. “She knew that children really responded to this dress. Children love bright colors. So, she often wore it when she was going to visit children — and sick children in particular,” Storey added. 

While she didn’t shy away from outfit repeats during the daytime, formal affairs called for one-of-a-kind gorgeous gowns. And the royal never disappointed. 

For instance, when attending a gala dinner at the National Gallery in 1985, she sparkled in a crystal-beaded Hachi look that is one of her best looks of all time.

But, perhaps the most memorable outfit from Princess Diana had to be The Revenge Dress. The same day her husband revealed he was having an affair on national television, the people’s princess stepped out in a Christina Stambolian cocktail mini dress that gave a very clear message — and sent pulses racing.

The Canadian beauty has made a name for herself with chic designer fashion looks. Indeed, a brief inventory of her style over the years shows that she’ll wear just about any color. The “My Heart Will Go On” diva has sported every shade of the rainbow over the years: red, orange, yellow, blue, purple, neon, pastel — you name it! But as much as she loves saturation, the mom of three sons — Réne-Charles and twins, Eddy and Nelson — will also sport a monochrome look in white or just about anything else. The Grammys red carpet is not for the faint of heart, with the biggest stars from music, movies, TV and more rocking whimsical (and sometimes wacky!) designs that push the limits of style.

Taylor Swift, for one, encouraged guests at her 30th birthday party in December 2019 to lean into the Christmas theme. The pop star, Antoni Porowski, Halsey and more famous attendees sported ugly sweaters for the star-studded event. “Happy birthday but make it Santa,” the Grammy winner captioned a series of Instagram photos.

“Honestly spending my 30th with the fans who have made my life what it is at jingle ball, then throwing the most aggressive holiday party known to womankind… I just.. seriously feel so lucky for you all and will spend forever trying to find ways to say thank you. *cries in Christmas tree,” Swift wrote of another set of pics from the shindig.

Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest showed off their own takes on the trend for their Live With Kelly and Ryan “Holiday Sweater Party” in December 2019 in celebration of National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. “Who are you calling ugly?” the All My Children alum asked. “If loving this sweater is wrong, I don’t want to be right.”

The American Idol host then explained the origin of the holiday: “So the history of this is, this began way back in 2011.”

However, Ripa disputed the idea that their sweaters — which featured a dog and a drummer with movable attachments — were ugly. “I would say it began way before that because if you’ve grown up in my house, we always had a holiday sweater,” she chimed in. “We used to call them holiday sweaters, we would never call them ugly sweaters because we wore them year-round.”

Seacrest agreed that there was no need to “use the ‘u’ word,” adding: “These are charming sweaters. These actually say that we’re happy people.” Ripa ultimately declared their festive tops “magic.”
