He does and says things that are so out of the ordinary that most people miss them. It's all business on the field. Off the field, you have to be in his headspace to follow him.

Two ideas spring to mind at first look. It's lovely and detailed, but with all of the astrological and mystical symbolism, it must have a deeper significance for him. Indeed, he stated in his article, "There's a deep and profound tale and link to absolutely every detail of this art work, and I'll tell a bit more about that one day." So let's look at the many interpretations of his ink work.

Beginning at the top, there are three astrological symbols representing the constellations Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. Given that Rodgers believes in astrology, as does his now-ex-fiancée Shailene Woodley, the Scorpio would represent her, while the Sagittarius would represent him. The Aquarius might also signify their engagement date, giving the overall top motif a significance that relates to the life of their partnership.

The Eye of Providence, a frequent symbol in various religious systems ranging from Freemasonry to Hinduism and Buddhism, is depicted below this. The one-dollar note depicts a version in allusion to God's all-seeing eye, but it is drawn from ancient Egypt and the eye of Horus. It can apply to a variety of ideas, but it is most likely referring to the "third eye" of eastern mysticism, which allows vision beyond physical sight.

We enter into murkier territory with two portrayals of lions, one calm and the other screaming. The lion is connected with the astrological sign Leo, as well as with the sun. Even in Christianity, the lion represents power and courage, as well as watchfulness and resurrection. Lions are fortunate in dreams, according to a contemporary Freudian interpretation, as the bringer of good luck to a soldier or sportsman.

The next element is a sunset above an open ocean, which has a universal message in almost all paintings. Water signifies birth, death, time, memory, and change, and has been employed as an aesthetic motif by filmmakers, artists, and photographers all across the world and since time immemorial. Rodgers' version might be a reflection of any of them, most likely due to the recent termination of his relationship with Woodley and the memories associated with the relationship.

Below this pattern is a greatly stylized peacock-type splaying atop a daggered crystal, which in art is commonly used to signify power, strength, confidence, and even divinity.

Of course, all of this is simply my opinion as a longtime filmmaker with a background in Art History. Rodgers may have an entirely different perspective on each of these things, and the work may have a considerably more simple or immensely more intricate significance than what I have deduced. If I had to wager, I'd go with a deeper meaning rather than what I could gather.

Some of the citizen data in the sample has been validated as legitimate by AFP and cybersecurity specialists, but the scale of the complete database remains unknown.

The 23-terabyte database, which the hacker claims contains the records of a billion Chinese citizens and was advertised on a forum late last month but only picked up by cybersecurity experts this week, is being sold for 10 bitcoin (approximately $200,000) and is being advertised on a forum late last month.

"It appears to be from many sources. Some appear to be census data, while others look to be face recognition systems "Robert Potter, co-founder of the cybersecurity firm Internet 2.0, stated

At least four of the more than a dozen persons contacted by AFP verified their personal information, such as names and residences, as they were recorded in the database.

"That's why so many people have added my WeChat account in the last few days. Should I contact the authorities?" said a woman called Hao.

"I'm pretty perplexed as to why my personal information was released," added another lady, Liu.

Users hypothesized in response to the initial post that the data was hacked from an Alibaba Cloud server where it was supposedly being held by the Shanghai police.

Potter, the cybersecurity analyst, verified that the files were obtained through a breach of Alibaba Cloud, which did not reply to an AFP request for comment.

If proven, the breach would be one of the greatest in history, as well as a severe violation of China's recently passed data protection rules.

"Heads will roll over this one," said Kendra Schaefer, a technology partner at research firm Trivium China.

A fax seeking response from China's cybersecurity administration was not returned.

To put things into perspective, let's look at Zeus, one of Shazam's power sources. Zeus has consistently been shown to be on par with characters such as Highfather and Darkseid, whether in the Injustice or Prime universes.

Billy, as Shazam, possesses that power as well as the powers of five other legendary gods and heroes. Isn't that enough proof for you? So, according to an article in DC Nation #2, Shazam is the 9th fastest being in the universe due to the speed he's been granted.

There's a reason his old moniker was "World's Mightiest Mortal!" Not to mention that in nearly every depiction of Shazam in animation, live action, and comics, he is portrayed as Superman's equal, if not better.

4. The New Superman

Kenan has the same powers as Superman, but he uses them in a different way and has a few extra abilities that Clark does not. He gained his abilities as a result of an experiment that transferred the deceased New 52 Superman's life force, or Qi.

Kenan's powers don't work the same way as Clark's, he doesn't get a boost from being blasted with solar energy, and kryptonite can kill him because he's human.

Furthermore, Kenan had to initially focus his Qi in different parts of his body to use his powers, such as his fists for strength, his ears for super-hearing, and so on. Kenan can use his full Kryptonian power set and then some now that he's matured.

Kenan has both the embodiments of the Yin and Yang principles within him, allowing him to tap into each for different powers.

Kenan's Kryptonian powers are boosted to unknown levels by focusing solely on the Yang aspect. By concentrating on the Yin aspect, Kenan transforms into a ghost-like being capable of eluding a bogus Green Lantern construct that mimicked the properties of kryptonite.

3. Fate, Dr.

This entry comes with an asterisk because technically, the Helmet of Nabu - which contains Nabu's spirit - possesses all of the power. However, the helmet cannot function without a host, which is why Dr. Fate qualifies for this completely accurate and definitive list.

Dr. Fate, one of the Lords of Order, is nearly unrivaled in terms of magical prowess. When Dr. Fate decided to destroy all magic, Constantine knew he and Swamp Thing couldn't stop him, so he summoned the Phantom Stranger.

However, even the Phantom Stranger was unable to defeat Dr. Fate and was sucked into the helmet. Even Zatanna, one of the most powerful Homo Magi ever, thought she and the rest of the Justice League Dark needed help taking down Dr. Fate and the other Lords of Order when they were given hosts.

Nabu's spirit is one of the oldest in existence, and he also possesses what is arguably the greatest repository of magical knowledge in existence. Dr. Fate is one of the most powerful beings in DC Comics when he works with a capable host.

2. Flash and Reverse Flash

In reality, this spot could go to any speedster, including Wally West, Barry Allen, Bart Allen, and Eobard Thawne. Each has demonstrated time and again that having super speed allows them to do more than just run fast.

During Final Crisis, both Wally and Barry outran the Black Racer long enough to direct it at an injured Darkseid, killing him. As he approached the speed of light, Wally created the infinite mass punch. When Barry was careless with time travel, he created the Flashpoint universe. And Thawne has demonstrated the ability to vibrate his hand in order to phase through a person and kill them.

Wally would, unintentionally, cause anything he phased through to explode due to the sudden increase in kinetic energy.

After Barry, Wally, Bart, and Jay trapped him in the Speed Force, even Superboy Prime was terrified of speedsters.

The versatility of super speed cannot be overstated; having super speed, particularly at the level of Wally, Barry, Bart, and Thawne, makes them universal level threats.

1. Manhattan, Dr.

Could someone else have done it? We all know who and what Dr. Manhattan is capable of, but in case you forgot, Doomsday Clock #9 beautifully demonstrated his abilities.

After an explosion in Moscow knocked Superman unconscious, nearly all of Earth's superheroes, with the exception of Wonder Woman and Batman, flew to Mars to confront the source of the energy signature that injured Superman.

They discover Dr. Manhattan upon landing, and Guy Gardner proceeds to educate Dr. Manhattan on who they are and the villains they have defeated over the years. Just as Dr. Manhattan approaches Guy, he examines his ring and destroys it.

He quickly followed that with an attack from some of Earth's most skilled magic users, before telling them what the energy they're channeling is and launching it back at them.

After stopping a few more attacks from Starfire, the Shazam Family, and Firestorm, the rest of Earth's heroes begin focusing their attacks on Dr. Manhattan all at once. Supergirl, Shazam, three Green Lanterns, Stargirl, Big Barda, Blue Beetle's ship, and Captain Atom just manage to destroy his body before he reconstitutes it and blasts them all out.

All of this was accomplished without Dr. Manhattan breaking a sweat, as he has been more interested in the heroes' abilities than anything else throughout the battle. If that's not power, I'm not sure what is.

Characters like Superman and Wonder Woman have repeatedly demonstrated that they are at the pinnacle of strength, having gone toe-to-toe with powerhouses like Darkseid and Mongul.

But for every god, extraterrestrial, and demigod, there is a human who is equally, if not more, strong. Sure, two of the Trinity aren't human, but there's a reason Batman stands shoulder to shoulder with them, and it has nothing to do with his pocketbook.

There are many individuals in the pages of DC Comics that can claim of being stronger than Superman, whether it's due to magic, atomic research, or a great piece of jewelry.

Before we begin, a minor but vital disclaimer: characters such as Zatanna and Raven do not qualify since Zatanna is a Homo Magi (literally a separate species) and Raven is part demon.

Now that that's out of the way, let's look at some of DC Comics' most strong characters.

10. The Plastic Man

Plastic Man is one of those heroes whose powers are so ridiculous that they reveal just how powerful he is. Plastic Man can control his size and density in addition to stretching his limbs.

He has the ability to form his body into almost whatever he sees, whether anything as enormous as a t-rex or as little as a bottle cap. We've never seen Plastic Man reach a limit in terms of how big or little he can make his body grow.

Given his body's elasticity, taking a punch from some of DC's toughest hitters wouldn't bother him either. He can deliver his own haymakers because he can also boost his density.

In Injustice, we saw him subdue someone like the Flash by slithering his way inside their body and tightening his grasp on their wind pipe.

The only way to defeat Plastic Man would be to borrow an idea from Dr. Doom at Marvel and simultaneously stretch and freeze him till he shatters. Otherwise, Plastic Man is invincible.

9. Captain Atom

This place might possibly go to Firestorm because their power sets are so close, but Captain Atom takes it for two reasons. The first is because the character inspired Dr. Manhattan (more on him later), and the second is because of the spectacular combat between the Captain and Superman in Justice League Unlimited.

While we're on the subject of the conflict, let's take a time to reflect on it. During the encounter, we witness Captain Atom's mastery over radiation by utilizing his powers to simulate red sun radiation in try to harm Superman, and if it weren't for his poorer endurance than the Man of Steel's, he may have won.

Captain Atom possesses tremendous strength, flying, and super speed, in addition to control over various types of radiation.

His molecular rebuilding abilities and capacity to regulate his own density, allowing him to become intangible - similar to Martian Manhunter - are where things get very fascinating.

8. Gotham Girl 

Gotham Girl is an undoubtedly unique item on our list, owing mostly to the fact that she is a new character, but not for the reasons you might expect.

Gotham Girl effectively possesses all of Superman's abilities, in case you weren't aware. Her powers are fascinating since utilizing them depletes her life energy, and she may improve her powers by surrendering more of her life energy. Her brother, soon before dying, used all of his abilities to beat the Justice League on his own.

Her inclusion on this list is distinguished by the aforementioned disadvantage.

At the conclusion of Tom King's Batman run, Batman discovers a treatment for Gotham Girl's condition, enabling her to retain her talents without them killing her.

But this raises a few questions: would she still die young because she utilized her talents so extensively before discovering a cure? Can she still boost her abilities by draining her life force?

If the solution allows her to live a long life and she can still use her talents without their killing her, Gotham Girl's position on this list will need to be raised. But, until those questions are answered, being above Captain Atom is nothing to laugh at.

7.Green Lantern

Because there are now seven human Green Lanterns, we'll limit our focus to Hal Jordan for this article.

At the start of DC Rebirth, Hal accomplished something no other Green Lantern had done before: he used his own willpower to construct his own power ring.

This would prove to be only the beginning of Hal's new abilities, as he would go on to demolish War World and nearly enter the Speed Force in a construct while flying past the New God Lightray.

His greatest achievement, though, occurred when he and Kyle were captured by General Zod. Hal handed Kyle his ring in order for him to flee and seek reinforcements, but Hal's will was so strong that wearing the ring forced Kyle to behave more like Hal.

Remember, this is the same Kyle Rayner who managed to resist Parallax from controlling his body and went on to become the White Lantern.

Hal then beat General Zod while they were battling on a planet with two yellow suns after Kyle returned his ring. It's one thing to defeat a Kryptonian, but it's quite another to defeat an amplified one.

6. Animal Man

Oh my, here we go again. Buddy Baker, or Animal Man, is to animals what Swamp Thing is to plants. He is the Red's avatar, a power that binds all creatures together.

But the Red includes the whole world, allowing Buddy to channel the powers of any animal - even extinct ones - and to channel numerous talents at the same time.

Another key thing to remember about the Red is that, as animals, we are also related to it.

This relationship is significant because it allows Buddy to transfer his mind into anybody and begin transforming into his own body.

Buddy's daughter was in risk of being killed as an illustration of this. She utilized her Red link to transport her mind into the body of a neighboring fox until the threat passed and she could transform back into a human girl.

Buddy's creativity is the only true foreseeable limit to his abilities. There's nothing preventing him from reaching into the Red and channeling the energies of a Kryptonian and combining them with those of a Martian. Food for thought.

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer, also known as the Duffer Brothers, have previously suggested that a time leap will be included, which makes sense given the young actors' rapid growth. Meanwhile, executive producer Shawn Levy has stated that he does not want the series to go on too long, implying that a bold, satisfying finish is on the way. "We don't want to be one of those programs that flails around looking for a way to land," he added. "We really want to hit the ground running."

In Season 4, our Hawkins heroes faced Vecna, a strong foe with a convoluted past with Eleven and Dr. Martin Brenner. The struggle was one of their most difficult ever, and it will continue until season 5. While there is no official Stranger Things season 5 release date, we can utilize our experience of prior seasons to predict when new episodes will be released.

Season 5 premiere date for Stranger Things

Given that Stranger Things Season 5 has yet to begin production, it's reasonable to assume we'll have to wait a little longer until the next chapter arrives. Season 4 concluded filming in September 2021, eight months after it began in February 2020, due to COVID-related shutdowns, and the first seven episodes were not published until May 2022, eight months after filming ended.

Prior to the pandemic, each season took about six to seven months to film. When you factor in significant VFX post-production labor, it takes well over a year to produce a season from beginning to end. As a result, we believe Stranger Things season 5 will not be released until late 2023 at the earliest.

Realistically, the next season will most likely debut in 2024. Seasons 2 and 3 were nearly two years apart, and that was before the coronavirus messed things up, so we know the Duffers aren't hesitant to put us to the test. Because this is the final season, they're definitely going to want to go big, which means season 5 may be even longer. We'll keep you updated as filming progresses.

Is Season 5 of Stranger Things the final season?

Stranger Things season 5 will be the final chapter in the saga of Eleven, her companions in Hawkins, and the Upside Down, but it will not be the last Netflix series rooted in the Stranger Things world.

When announcing the show's impending demise on Netflix, the Duffer Brothers teased a possible spin-off series: "Within the Stranger Things universe, there are many more interesting stories to be told. New secrets, fresh adventures, and new unanticipated heroes"

"We haven't informed anybody about the idea yet, let alone written it," they said afterwards. "We believe that everyone, even Netflix, will be shocked by the notion since it is so novel. Finn Wolfhard, who is a tremendously clever child, accurately predicted what it would be about. Except for Finn, no one else knows!"

The narrative of Stranger Things Season 5

The Stranger Things season 5 narrative is currently unknown, but the Duffer Brothers have hinted that they have the entire series' ending very well figured out. "We know what the finale is," Matt Duffer previously stated in an SFX interview. "It's possible that it may change, but I doubt it since it's one of those endings that simply feels, and has always felt, right. It also appears to be unavoidable. Then, when you figure it out, you're like, 'Oh yes, that's exactly what it has to be.'"

"We're bringing new material, but we're also tightening and wrapping up in a specific way," stated David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper, during the season 4 promotion. "At some point, which I can't really talk about, I want it to have a clear, clean, distinct, and certain finale."

Season 4 ended with each group - in Nevada, Hawkins, and Russia, respectively - inadvertently working together to take down Vecna. While Max is baiting his subconscious at the Creel House, Robin, Steve, and Nancy burn his vulnerable physical form in the Upside Down. Eleven's thoughts finds its way to Max to aid her in facing off against the great enemy, while Mike and Will submerge her in a homemade sensory deprivation tank. However, as Will points out at the end of episode 9, Vecna is far from defeated.

"I can sense him now that I'm back in Hawkins. And he is aching, yet he is still alive. It's odd knowing who it was all along. But I can recall what he thinks and how he thinks. He's not going to stop until he's stolen everything... everything... We must murder him "He informs Mike seriously.

"5 is going to be pedal to the metal from the first scene," Ross Duffer told The Wrap, implying that whatever occurs would be dramatic. "I watched CEOs weep who I'd never seen cry before, and it was crazy."

In recent weeks, fans have speculated on what may occur in the fifth and final chapter. We anticipate that time travel will play a significant role, given that the Upside Down was discovered to be stuck in 1983.

Season 5 cast of Stranger Things

It's quite unlikely that any of the key cast members would break up before Stranger Things concludes, thus they're all anticipated to return for season 5. That means Millie Bobby Brown will return as Eleven, Finn Wolfhard will return as Mike Wheeler, and Sadie Sink will return as Max Mayfield... if she survives her coma.

Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), Noah Schnapp (Will Byers), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Maya Hawke (Robin Buckley), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers), Brett Gelman (Murray Bauman), David Harbour (Jim Hopper), and Winona Ryder are all expected to return (Joyce Byers).

Joseph Quinn, who played Eddie Munson in season 4, recently told The Guardian  that he'd want to see the head of the Dungeons & Dragons-obsessed Hellfire Club return in season 5. "I'm going to be upset if they don't bring me back," he joked. "I'd be delighted if they'd have me." (However, given that the character was slain by a swarm of Demobats in episode 9, we're not sure how feasible it is.)

"Let me put it this way: I am aware of Season 5. Take what you will from it "According to Jamie Campbell Bower, who portrays Vecna/Henry Creel/One.

I expected to be viciously mobbed, and possibly cancelled, like others before me. Nonetheless, the outcome astounded me. Despite some attempts to have me removed from the list, I received a flood of supportive emails from others who share my concern about the process by which radical political doctrines are being injected into STEM pedagogy, and objective science is being subjected to regressive moralization and censorship. The strong positive-to-negative response ratio (even on Twitter!) gave me optimism that the silent liberal majority inside STEM would (finally) triumph over illiberal forces.

People shared their observations of cancel culture, the politicization of scientific institutions, language policing, and grievance-mongering among activists. They spoke of cancellations of prominent scientists by their own schools, whose reputation they’d helped build—Sir Ronald Fisher by Cambridge, Robert A. Millikan by Caltech, and Thomas Henry Huxley by Western Washington University (and also by Imperial College London). They also updated me on the latest absurd attempts to ideologically subvert STEM programs, as with the new undergraduate course at Cornell University dedicated to exploring the supposed connection between the cosmos and racism. (Students enrolled in Black Holes: Race and the Cosmos will be tasked with answering such questions as, “Is there a connection between the cosmos and the idea of racial blackness?”)

I also was pleased to read reports from other scientists who, like me, possessed a historical understanding of this kind of ideological movement. With their permission, I will share some of their comments.

In The Peril of Politicizing Science, I made mention of the Soviets banning resonance theory—an important contribution to our understanding of molecular valence-bond structures—as “bourgeois pseudoscience.” Following up on this, physicist Alexander Efros told me that his father, a Soviet chemist who used resonance theory in his own research, was so concerned about official condemnations of this "metaphysical science" that, in 1952, he kept a small suitcase full of warm clothes near the front door of the family home, expecting to be arrested and deported.

Another physicist, Ilya Kaplan, reminisced about his encounter with Iosif Rapoport, a prominent Russian geneticist and war hero, who publicly opposed the Soviet ban on research into Mendelian genetics, infamously enforced by Stalin’s favorite agronomist, pseudoscientist Trofim Lysenko. Rapoport was the only attendee at the 1948 Meeting of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences to speak up against Lysenko. Consequently, Rapoport was expelled from the Party and severely punished (but, miraculously, was not imprisoned, and survived Stalinism).

The point of learning from history, rather than rewriting it, resonated with many. Roi Baer, a theoretical chemist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, wrote: “For me, it is difficult to think of [Nobel-prize winning German physicist] Johannes Stark as a great scientist, because of his antisemitism and his vocal call for the persecution and canceling of Jewish scientists and ‘Jewish physics.’ Still, I teach the ‘Stark effect’ in my class [the effect caused by an electric field on the spectral behavior of atoms and molecules]. I also tell my students what a terrible man Stark was. He deserves condemnation, but not a cancellation.”

"Three thousand years ago, complexity was accepted," Baer continued, acknowledging the complexity of human nature and the protagonists of history. In the Old Testament, King David is shown as a magnificent man with moral flaws. He was the leader of a gang of robbers, extortionists, and assassins. As a king, he orchestrated the killing of Uriah the Hittite, the beautiful Bat Sheva's husband, simply so he could have her. God severely chastised David for his transgressions. His imperial magnificence, however, was retained."

A description of some personally witnessed or experienced incidence of cancel culture, or of the incursion of politics into scientific instruction, appeared in about a quarter of the approximately 200 email comments I received. With a few exceptions, these writers indicated they were afraid of being associated with others who were opposed to the movement. "The situation in STEM is unmistakably Orwellian," observed one writer, who asked to remain anonymous. "I'm frequently afraid of expressing the Wrong point of view, which leads to self-censorship. Worse, I occasionally feel compelled to make a remark (a social performance) stating that I agree with the Correct point of view."

"I came [over] your opinion... while going around Twitter over the weekend," another correspondent commented. Unsurprisingly, a Twitter mob... banded together to demand that this piece be removed from the JPCL. I'm disgusted by this conduct... Instead of just shutting down ideas like these, they should be vigorously and completely addressed and contested. I'm a black homosexual man who apparently belongs to the same group of individuals that [the mob] is trying to defend. However, I do not believe I am safe or protected. As a result, I often keep silent on social media sites, worried that my future career in research may be jeopardized."

The extent of fear among American scientists is shocking. An old friend cautioned me: “Unfortunately 1984 doesn’t end well.” The analysis of the responses showed that self-censorship—the refusal to produce, distribute, circulate, or express something for fear of punishment—and compelled speech are experienced at all career stages, from graduate student to emeritus faculty. Dr. Lee Jussim characterizes it as an epidemic: 40 percent of Americans self-censor their speech, greatly exceeding levels observed during the McCarthy era. Alarmingly, the level of self-censorship is higher on college campuses and among the more educated.

This pervasive sense of fear is not unfounded, as expressing opinions (or research findings) that are out of line with the dominant ideology is a recipe for attracting a bullying campaign. The sharp rise of attacks on scholars targeted for their speech has prompted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education to start a database of such incidents (as described in this Inside Higher Ed article).

Censorship and suppression of dissent is now typically imposed not from top-down authorities, but from the bottom (i.e., the mob) in the form of social-media-powered social ostracism and bullying. Substantive and scholarly discussion on complex issues requires discipline and effort. Twitter, where anyone can spontaneously hurl 280 characters into cyberspace, has no room for the required depth or nuance. As Seth Moskowitz has noted, meme activism corrupts our political conversations and endangers our democratic process because it encourages performative and fleeting action, silences dissent, and sanctions simplistic and naive political beliefs.

My use of the word “mob” might be taken to suggest that the illiberal movement I am describing lacks institutional backing. But that isn’t the case. Regrettably, the leaders of our organizations are failing to protect the core principles of science and education. Rather than resist censorship, they enable it. The cancellation of Dorian Abbot, a geophysicist from the University of Chicago, is a prime example of how “coward culture” has taken hold of our institutions, thereby enabling cancel culture. Abbot had been invited to deliver a prestigious public lecture at MIT on “Climate and the Potential for Life on Other Planets” in October. But Twitter vigilantes, outraged over Abbot’s advocacy for equal opportunity, fairness, merit-based evaluation, and academic freedom, initiated a social-media disinvitation campaign. MIT quickly caved in to the mob’s demands and cancelled the event, violating its own “policy of open research and free interchange of information among scholars.” Such precedents create a chilling effect that inhibits the expression of non-conforming ideas throughout academia.

Some institutions have actually institutionalized censorship. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has issued guidelines urging editors to “consider whether or not any content … might have the potential to cause offence.” The guidelines, developed after a German science journal retracted an essay criticizing diversity hiring authored by Brock University professor Tomáš Hudlický, instruct editors to be on the lookout for “any content that could reasonably offend someone on the basis of their age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, marital or parental status, physical features, national origin, social status or disability,” or that is “likely to be upsetting, insulting or objectionable to some or most people.” Since such a vaguely defined standard, interpreted broadly, could serve to block the publication of almost every imaginable kind of article, it clearly undermines the RSC’s ostensible mission to facilitate the communication of high-quality chemistry research and to engage in the “general advancement of chemical science and its application.”

There was some of the criticism I got that deserved a reaction. Those who questioned why my piece didn't address political infiltration from both right-wing and left-wing sources fall into this group. To respond, I should point out that conservatives have historically attempted to impose their opinions on science, from creationism to climate change, stem-cell research, and COVID policy. However, these examples are well-known, and there is little disagreement among scientists regarding the necessity to reject such demands. The danger posed by the radical left, on the other hand, is more difficult to discern and combat since it frequently receives official acceptance under euphemism names like social justice, diversity, inclusion, and equity. And being labeled "anti-social justice" in 2021 isn't all that different from being labeled "bourgeois" in the Soviet Union a century ago.  In Soviet times, those who opposed the Party line were called “enemies of the people”; now they are called “racists” and “sexists.” Moreover, the extreme Right tends to attack objective science in discrete subject areas, whereas today’s leftist doctrines seek to undermine the entire enterprise of science, casting the very idea of objective truth and the scientific method as tools of colonialism and oppression.

To those who wonder if I am concerned about societal injustices, the answer is yes. We must discuss tax reform, police reform, universal health care, subsidized child care, crime reduction, and, most importantly, enhancing educational access. We must explore the factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women and minorities in STEM fields and devise solutions to these issues (they are not simple). None of this, however, has anything to do with the causes that draw the most visible and aggressive social-justice activists to college campuses. Their efforts are directed, often single-mindedly, at enforcing contortions of language and ideology within their own rarified institutions, forming task forces to rename equations, invent microaggressions, police language, rename moths and ants, and repackage soap. And they are completely vicious in the use of mob tactics to intimidate or cancel those who dare object to their extreme strictures. Again, the parallels with the USSR of my youth are rather obvious.

The claim that by condemning the extreme left, I am playing into the hands of the extreme right was one line of argumentative resistance I faced (by which these correspondents meant Trump supporters, in particular). It's the same kind of argument that's been used throughout history to avoid — or even suppress — criticism of those who are seen to be on the "right side" of history. This argument has been invoked to excuse the horrific crimes of totalitarian regimes: Western liberals looked the other way when the Soviet regime was throwing dissidents into jail and subjecting them to punitive psychiatry.

Unfortunately, we continue to see variations of this argument everywhere in progressive silos. In many ways, it’s just an inversion of the tribal reflex that long served to suppress reporting on sexual abuses within universities, athletic teams, religious institutions, and countless other institutions, on the cynical theory that calling out evil within one’s ranks would undermine the “greater good” embedded in that group’s collective mission. As Yascha Mounk recently wrote, “the primary question most participants in public debate ask themselves is not, ‘How do my values inform my views on this matter?’ or ‘What is the evidence for what is being asserted?’ Rather, it is ‘How do I demonstrate that I am a loyal member of my political tribe?’ As it happens, the easiest way to do that is simple: Look for what the enemy says on any one issue and stake out the opposite position.”

We must break the hold of illiberal ideology and return to our collective senses—to stop self-censoring out of fear of the crowd and excusing stupidity in the name of political allyship and to begin defending plurality, humanism, and democracy. It's past time for the liberal majority's silent majority to stand up.
